The Legacy & Light Award is designed to honor past educators in South Dakota — those who may not have always received public recognition, but whose impact on students, colleagues, and communities has left a lasting legacy.
When considering who to nominate, think about:
- Classroom Teachers – The ones who stayed late, created opportunities with few resources, and inspired generations of learners.
- Specialists & Support Staff – Reading teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, and others who worked behind the scenes to ensure every student had a chance to succeed.
- Rural & Small-School Educators – Teachers who wore many hats, often teaching multiple grades or subjects, and became a steady presence in their communities.
- Coaches & Activity Leaders – Educators who shaped students’ character and leadership skills beyond the classroom.
- Mentors of Teachers – Retired educators, cooperating teachers, or staff who guided new educators and helped them grow into their profession.
- Unsung Heroes – Those who might not have won awards or had their name in the newspaper but whose students and colleagues would tell you: “They changed my life.”
These are the educators whose light continues to shine — and we want to lift up their stories so our future teachers can carry their legacy forward.
