Europe Re-Imagined
A Community Survey On The Everyday Perception of The European Union From Northwest Ireland from CavanPPN and the Department of Foreign Affairs. The below are findings from a panel workshop on this topic. You are invited now to input your own ideas on these questions. These ideas are from a public survey panel and in no way express the policies or stances of CavanPPN as an organisation.
1) We asked: Identify one positive and one negative about a European Union Ireland They said: Positives: Free travel and work, social and environmental protections, provision of funds to support community growth, collective identity and working together, it’s collaborative, easier to experience eachother’s cultures, better encouragement of standard of living and Ireland’s development has been assisted by being a part of Europe. Negatives: Some overarching laws trump our local ones, detached decision making from local citizens, overly administrative and distanced from the everyday.
2) We asked: If Ireland had NEVER joined the European Union what might ithave looked like today They said: Much less developed as a country, disconnected as a culture and a destination. We would have our own development in our own hands for good and bad, Ireland would be a backwater and unable to collectively compete or trade without our European collective bargaining. We might have a slightly stronger economy but European regulations keeps our politicians in check from runaway decisions. We’d have less immigrants to Ireland helping to support our economic growth and give us more cultural diversity.
3) We asked: What do you most value and are most concerned about in The European Union today They said: Value: Freedom of movement, freedom to live in other EU countries, equality of citizens, brings common sense regs to insane local environmental decisions. There is a sense of dignity to the EU. Legal frameworks to help support justice beyond Ireland. The single currency. Great health and education on the continent. Concern: Loss of national power to continental empowerment. Lack of moral compass for larger decisions. Militarization and potential war with Russia. The loss of local voices in the collective voice e.g. Irish neutrality. Too complex and lacks connectivity to the citizens of Europe. Concerning move toward Americanism and a capitalist agenda. The rise of the right vs. need for freedom of speech.
4) We asked: Imagine its 2075. What is the best version of a European Union you live in. What is it like? They said: A continent that cherishes the equality of all its members. An affordable place to call home with free travel helping exchanges of ideas and cultures. A Union where the policies reflect the everyday needs of people and helps them achieve wellbeing. A continent that values a fairer socialist democratic society and cherishes wellbeing, a continent of sanity, rationality and equality that has balance between the hyper-individualism of America and collective authoritarianism of China. A technological innovator which helps insert tech-developing into our lives. A peaceful continent where each country shares without losing its cultural integrity. A place of carefully considered development where the people are served and not led and where we rise together as a collective voice.
5) We asked: If you could say ONE THING to your European Council representatives what would that be? They said: Respect our elders, cherish our children and support our communities. Please make sure morality is at the heart of all your actions on our behalf. Support our new communities to the continent for the enriched diversities they bring. I need to feel like I BELONG without losing myself, to share in the beautiful patchwork quilt of cultures that is OUR Europe. Immigration is our great challenge, please solve it with proper integration. Share the wealth more evenly and don’t be afraid NOT to be Americanised. It feels somewhat unequal between the members… help us to feel EQUAL.
6) We asked: Describe the EU in ONE WORD They said: Political, Invasive, Equality, Collective, Transformation, Community, Inclusive, Equal, Crossroads, Distant, Checks & Balances and Dynamic.
