Award Description: The ASIP Young Scientist Leadership Award recognizes outstanding and sustained achievements at the earliest stages of a career in biomedical research. This award is supported by the A.D. Sobel – ASIP Education Fund. The award will be conferred on a young scientist with accomplishments that include exceptional volunteered service and/or leadership within the ASIP, as well as achievements that form the foundation for a successful career as an experimental pathology researcher (scientific publications, scientific presentations at national/international meetings, and awards for excellent research). The Meritorious Awards Committee will consider the extent and nature of the nominee’s involvement/engagement in Society activities/programs, as well as other characteristics associated with early career scientists (research productivity and impact). The ASIP Young Scientist Leadership awardee is recognized each year at the ASIP Annual Meeting, where the selected awardee delivers an Award Lecture.
Award Eligibility: Eligible candidates for the ASIP Young Scientist Leadership Award must be an ASIP member in continuous good standing for at least two years immediately prior to nomination. At the time of nomination, candidates may be an advanced predoctoral trainee, a postdoctoral fellow (PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent degree), or an early career scientist (less than 2 years as an Assistant Professor or equivalent position). Nominees should have sustained and significant contributions to the Society (through leadership and/or participation in Society activities/programs).
Scoring Rubric: ASIP Young Scientist Leadership Award nomination packages will be scored based upon: (1) leadership within the ASIP, (2) engagement in ASIP activities and programs, (3) published record of peer-reviewed research and overall impact of the nominee’s science, (4) scientific presentations at national/international meetings, (5) awards recognizing excellent experimental pathology research, and (6) strength of letters of support.
IMPORTANT: Nomination award applications submitted for consideration for the ASIP Young Scientist Leadership Award MUST include:
1. The nominee’s curriculum vitae (CV), including a complete bibliography of published research and details of all research funding (intramural and/or extramural). The nominee’s CV should include clear descriptions of contributions to research, teaching, mentorship, leadership (including institutional leadership), and contributions to the ASIP. The nominee’s CV should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.
2. Three letters of support, including at least two from current ASIP members. Letters of support should address each element considered for the award, including leadership and engagement in the activities of the ASIP, and other achievements in experimental pathology research (scientific publications, scientific presentations at national/international meetings, and awards for excellent research). Letters of support should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.
