    Are We on Track? How Countries Are Progressing Toward Global Goals in Reading and Math

    Professor Kaplan will explore how countries around the world are progressing toward the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Attaining Minimum Proficiency in Reading and Mathematics.

    About the speaker:
    David Kaplan is Hilldale Professor and Richard L. Venezky Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Kaplan’s program of research focuses on the development of Bayesian statistical methods for education research. His work on these topics is directed toward applications to large-scale cross-sectional and longitudinal survey designs. Dr. Kaplan is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and served as the chair of its Research Advisory Committee.

    David Kaplan has strong ties to Heidelberg: In 2023 he was International Guest Professor and in 2021 Max Kade Visiting Professor at the Institut für Bildungswissenschaft at Heidelberg University. He has collaborated extensively with Prof. Dr. Nina Jude on joint publications. Kaplan has held several other visiting scholar positions in Germany, including receiving the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award in 2015 with a research affiliation at the Leibniz Institute for Education Research in Frankfurt am Main.  He is currently a Research Affiliate at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) in Bamberg.
