  • Apprenticeship / Traineeship Interest

  • Choosing the Right Programme

The Department of Workforce Development offers both Apprenticeship and Traineeship programmes to support workforce development and help employers build a skilled workforce. While both programmes provide structured, employment-based learning, they differ in duration, purpose, and expected outcomes.

    Apprenticeship Programme

An Apprenticeship is a structured, employment-based training programme that combines supervised workplace learning with formal technical education, enabling an individual to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to become qualified in a designated occupation.

In accordance with the National Certification and Apprenticeship Board Act 1997, an apprenticeship contract is for a period of not less than four (4) years, unless otherwise approved by the National Certification and Apprenticeship Board (NCAB).

Under the National Certification and Apprenticeship Board Act 1997, the NCAB is responsible for, among other things:

    • Approving employers to participate in the Apprenticeship Programme,
      Registering apprenticeship contracts, and
    • Ensuring employers provide appropriate supervision, mentoring, and structured training in accordance with approved training schemes and the requirements of the Act and Regulations

An apprenticeship is most appropriate for employers seeking to develop individuals into fully competent, skilled professionals within a designated trade or occupation through a long-term commitment to workplace training and technical education.

    Traineeship Programme

A Traineeship is a structured, employment-based training programme designed to provide individuals with practical workplace experience and foundational occupational skills while addressing current industry workforce needs.

A Traineeship contract is established for a period of no more than three (3) years and focuses on developing an individual's practical skills, workplace competencies, and employability through supervised, on-the-job training.

A traineeship is most appropriate for employers who wish to:

    • Develop entry-level talent,
    • Provide practical workplace experience,
    • Address immediate or emerging workforce skill needs, and
    • Prepare individuals for forward career progression and/or continuing employment.

  • Important Notice

To be eligible for approval under the Department of Workforce Development's Apprenticeship or Traineeship Programme, the proposed candidate must be a bona fide employee of the applicant employer.

Approval will only be granted once the candidate has been formally employed by the company and all required employment documentation have been completed. Applicant Employers submitting for individuals who are not employed or who have not yet commenced employment will not be approved until employment agreements are signed and submitted.

  • Training Plan

  • A training plan is the individualised schedule showing how a specific apprentice or trainee will be trained, in a specific workplace, to reach the standard required for the occupation.

It demonstrates that the establishment offers reasonable opportunities for proper training and that the employer can deliver all the practical and theoretical requirements of the applicable training scheme. It also shows that progression from basic to advanced competencies is structured and can be measured.

    It should contain:

    • the occupation and the applicable training scheme,
    • practical training by year, with hours and competency areas,
    • theoretical courses, the provider, and release arrangements,
    • the required proficiency tests and examinations,
    • the approved supervisor, and
    • how progress will be recorded (record book and annual return).

The training plan is required to assess your organization's ability to provide a structured and meaningful learning experience that supports the apprentice's successful completion of the programme.
