Overview
During the 3 hr children’s workshop, students will decorate a premade papermache skull. Children will be given examples and encouraged to use their imagination and creativity in decorating their own skulls. Students will work out their ideas and theme on paper before decorating the skull. A brief history of the holiday and celebrations of Dias de los Muertos will be given. All supplies will be provided by the El Paso Art Association and all skill levels are welcome.
Goals
1. Students will learn the history of Dias de los Muertos
2. Students will choose a theme and use their creativity to decorate their own skulls.
Provided Materials
Paper mache skulls, acrylic paint, brushes, feathers, tissue paper (to create flowers), felt & colored paper to create flowers, butterflies, crosses, jewels to glue on.
Art Process
1. Sketch idea & create a theme (use a print out of sugar skull)
2. Add a base color of acrylic paint to the paper mache skull
3. Add shapes onto the skull (flowers, crosses, hearts)
4. Paint in details
5. Add 3d elements for interest: jewels, feathers, puffs or sparkles
6. Create flowers, cross, heart, hat, butterflies out of felt or tissue paper
7. Add any final details
8. Enjoy!
Walk-In to Sign-In & Sign-Out Information
- Sign-In : Take your student to the second floor to sign-in with art instructor at 1pm (or a few minutes before) start of class.
- Sign-Out : Please be prompt to sign-out your student at 4pm.
Other details
- Water and light snacks will be provided.
- Students may get paint on clothing, so please dress accordingly.
