  • Michael L. Douglas Memorial Scholarship Application

  • This scholarship honors the life and legacy of Michael L. Douglas, a devoted Christian and man of deep faith, who passed on March 30, 2025, at age 68. Michael's relationship with Christ shaped every part of his life, guiding the way he treated others and the way he served his community. Michael L. Douglas was a deeply respected member of the water community whose steady character, professionalism, and commitment to service left a lasting impact across North Carolina and beyond. Known for his calm leadership, thoughtful guidance, and genuine care for people, Michael built a reputation rooted in integrity, fairness, and doing what was right. He spent his career helping communities, mentoring operators, and supporting the industry he loved. His legacy continues through the many colleagues, students, and professionals he encouraged and inspired. The Michael L. Douglas Memorial Scholarship is established to support individuals who share his dedication to learning, service, and strengthening the water industry. Southern Corrosion is honored to sponsor this scholarship in memory of Michael. He joined Southern Corrosion in 2014 following a distinguished career as a Civil Engineer with more than 30 years of experience with public water supply systems and drinking water regulation. Southern Corrosion, a family- owned business with over four decades of service to water systems across North Carolina, is a trusted leader in water tank maintenance programs.

    Applicants must:

    1. Plan to enroll in an NCRWA water or wastewater operator certification course within one year of being granted the award. 
    2. Be currently employed at a water or wastewater system that is a member of the North Carolina
    3. Demonstrate values that reflect Michael L. Douglas's legacy, including:
      • Integrity, honesty, and professional conduct
      • Respect for people and community
      • Professionalism and dedication to service
      • A commitment to learning, growth, and doing what is right

  • Selection Process

    • Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Southern Corrosion and NCRWA representatives, as well as Michael’s wife, Chiquita.

    • The committee evaluates applicants based on alignment with the values described above, clarity and sincerity of responses, and demonstrated commitment to the industry.

    • Selected recipient(s) will be notified by NCRWA and recognized at the NCRWA Annual Conference.
