  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Requirement

  • As part of the reinstatement for a Licence to Practice under the Canada Lands Surveyors Act, applicants must declare whether they have met the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements in accordance with the Bylaws:

ACLS Bylaws, Part 9, Section 9.4 (6) A Member applying for a license three or more years after receiving a Canada Lands Surveyor commission must provide evidence of having taken at least 45 hours of continuous professional development training according to section 9.5 in the last 3 years. This evidence shall be provided to the Registrar at the same time as the license application.

  • DECLARATION OF CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND/OR LICENCE STATUS (previously called Retiring CLS Checklist):

If you decide not to renew your Membership and/or License to Practice, you are required to complete a DECLARATION OF CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND/OR LICENCE STATUS (previously called Retiring CLS Checklist). This simple step keeps our records accurate and reduces unnecessary costs for ACLS and its members.

    Why This Matters

    • If you let your Membership and/or License lapse without filing the Declaration before December 31, you will be required to pay significant fees if you wish to reinstate. These include:
      • Reinstatement Assessment Fee ($175 or $250)
      • Up to three years of back fees
      • A Year 1 late payment penalty (50% of the license fee)
      • A Reinstatement Penalty of $250 for revoked membership or licence

In total, this could exceed $850 in fees and penalties for Reinstatement of Membership and $1970 in fees and penalties for Reinstatement of a Licence to Practice!

    • If you file the Declaration before December 31:
You will still be responsible for the Reinstatement Assessment Fee ($250) if you later return to practice, but you will avoid all other penalties.

  • Proof of Professional Liability Insurance

  • In accordance with Section 56 of the Canada Lands Surveyors Act (S.C. 1998, c. 14), all licensed Canada Lands Surveyors are required to maintain valid professional liability insurance as a condition of holding a License to Practice. This insurance ensures protection for both the public and the profession by providing coverage in the event of errors, omissions, or negligence in the delivery of professional surveying services.

To comply with these requirements, members must submit proof of current coverage—or proof of exemption, if applicable—when applying for or renewing their License to Practice. Maintaining up-to-date insurance documentation is essential to remain in good standing with the Association and to safeguard the integrity of Canada’s land administration systems.

  • FEES / FRAIS

  • What You Need to Pay:

Below is the list of fees associated with reinstating your ACLS Licence to Practice. To complete your application, you must select and pay all applicable fees.

Use these tips to guide your choices:

Did you file a DECLARATION OF CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND/OR LICENCE STATUS (previously called Retiring CLS Checklist) by December 31 in the year your licence expired?

If yes, you are required to pay Fee 1 & Fee 2 only.

If no, you are required to pay Fee 1, Fee 2, Fee 3, Fee 4.

Fee 1 - Start with the base reinstatement fee — depending on how long your license has lapsed, you must check one box to add the appropriate fee to your cart. Anyone reinstating their Licence to Practice must pay this fee.

Fee 2 - One year Licence to Practice Fee (for the current year) will be automatically added to your cart.

Fee 3 - This is a penalty you are required to pay if you did NOT complete the DECLARATION OF CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND/OR LICENCE STATUS (previously called Retiring CLS Checklist) by December 31 in the year your membership or licence expired.

Fee 4 - If your Licence to Practice has lapsed 12 months or more, you are required to pay up to three years in back-fees. If applicable, choose the number of years your licence was inactive and click the appropriate box to add the fee to your cart.

Please be sure that you have reviewed each of the 4 (four) fee sections below and selected all the appropriate fees for your situation. The four sections can be collapsed or expanded using the arrow on the right of each fee section.

Review the “Total” field carefully — it will sum up all your selections to show what you owe.

If you’re not sure which option(s) apply to your situation, don’t guess. Reach out to us at communications@acls-aatc.ca and we’ll help you choose the correct fees. You may also review the fee list and Bylaws on our website: https://www.acls-aatc.ca/en/bylaws
