  • ASIP 2028 Excellence in Mentoring Award Nomination Application Form

  • Award Description: The ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award recognizes significant contributions by an individual member to mentoring in the field of pathobiology research, teaching, and administration. The Meritorious Awards Committee will consider the nominee’s contributions to mentoring within their own research laboratory, department, and institution, more broadly within the discipline of pathology (outside their institution), and with respect to engagement in mentoring and mentoring activities within the Society. The ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award is presented each year at the ASIP Annual Meeting.

    Award Eligibility: Eligible candidates for the ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award must be an active ASIP member in continuous good standing for at least five years immediately prior to nomination. Nominees for the ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award can be early career (Assistant Professor or equivalent), mid-career (Associate Professor or equivalent), or a senior scientist (full Professor or equivalent), and can be an active investigator or inactive (retired or partially retired). Irrespective of career stage, nominees should have a strong record of mentoring and mentorship that is supported by letters of support from current or prior mentees. Nominees should also have sustained and significant contributions to the Society (through leadership and/or participation in Society activities/programs).

    Scoring Rubric: ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award nomination packages will be scored based upon: (1) mentoring philosophy, (2) the meritorious nature and impact of the nominee’s record of mentoring in the research laboratory setting, (3) contributions to mentoring at the nominee’s institution and/or the broader field of pathology, (4) contributions to the mentoring and mentorship activities within the ASIP, and (5) the strength of letters of support from peers and current/former mentees.

    IMPORTANT:
     Nomination award applications submitted for consideration for the ASIP Excellence in Mentoring Award MUST include:

    1. The nominee's curriculum vitae (CV), including a complete bibliography of published research. The nominee’s CV should include clear descriptions of contributions to mentoring in research, teaching, and administration (including institutional leadership and leadership in the wider field of pathology), and contributions to mentoring and mentorship activities within the ASIP. The nominee’s CV should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.

    2. A candidate’s statement describing their record of mentoring and mentorship, including (i) mentoring philosophy, (ii) mentoring of trainees in pathobiology research and success of their trainees/mentees, and (iii) mentoring at their institution, in professional societies, and within the broader field of pathology.

    3. Three letters of support from peers, including at least two from current ASIP members. Peer letters of support should address each element considered for the award, including the nominee’s mentorship of trainees in pathobiology research, mentorship at the nominee’s institution and in the broader field of pathology, and engagement in the mentoring activities of the ASIP. Letters of support should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.

    4. Three letters of support from former or current mentees describing the nominee’s outstanding mentorship and its impact on their training and/or careers. Letters of support should be updated in subsequent years if the nomination is renewed.
