Dev Pods Sponsored Membership Application

Anyone 18 or older can join Dev Pods by paying membership dues - for details visit DevPods.gg. Strangers on Patreon cover costs for a fraction of members who would otherwise be unable to participate (details). Only the Dev Pods cofounders (Chris DeLeon and Tim Ruswick) or someone under an NDA ensuring privacy will see your answers, and no one else inside or outside of our community knows who participates with their dues covered through this option. Submissions go into a pool, not an ordered queue, so when we have an opening that matches your application yours could be next. The wait tends to be 3-7 months, though may be shorter or longer. More people apply for sponsorship than we have openings, so not all sponsorship applicants can be admitted.

Dev Pods is not designed to be a full-time or fast-paced program. Most members participate only a few hours each week, maybe 2-3 sittings spaced out on some weeks but no involvement on other weeks. It's flexible and self-paced. No one tells anyone else which game team to be part of. Members pick their own roles and tasks one week at a time. However, we have a responsibility to people who pay for the support of these openings to ensure the opportunity is assigned to people using of it. This is like how if someone has a scholarship but doesn't attend classes, it has to be reallocated to someone else. If a member joins through sponsorship but does nothing within a month of being admitted, or doesn't participate on team projects at least 6 weeks (about every other week) in a 3 month period, the opening will be cycled to another applicant.

    • Members must be 18 or older. • Dev Pods aims to be a supportive and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, level of experience, age or religion. • Dev Pods games are released free online, using GitHub's Display Name for credits. • Any part or work-in-progress stage of Dev Pods games may appear in portfolios, social media posts, and community promotional material. • External assets (even public domain or CCO) or generative AI art/audio/text are not suitable for Dev Pods games. Everything in our games is created by teammates. • Video updates by leads may be viewed by people not currently in Dev Pods. • No spam or self-promotion (server invites, ads, etc). This includes messaging members about outside promotions. DMs about Dev Pods are fine, though chat in group channels tends to be best for teamwork. • Stalking, threats, intimidation, doxxing or harassment are not tolerated in any form. To maintain a professional environment posts containing (or linking to) nudity, sex, hard violence, slurs, or excessively disrespectful language are not permitted. • If you see something against the rules or that makes you feel unsafe, let staff know.

This is a community of people making freeware games together for practice with related support, not a network of solo developers or suitable for outside commercial projects.

Check all that apply. If you're open to any programming language or engine, marking the 1-2 you'd prefer using first can speed up your application process since it helps us tell which developer group it'd be easiest for you to join. We understand this answer may evolve over time. It's fine if you can do something (i.e. checked it on the previous question) but don't want to do it on freeware games - ex. it's your day job so you only do it in professional roles, you know how but don't enjoy doing it, etc.

We are a learning and practice community, so unlike a job application this does not need to be impressive or include official credentials. On the other hand, there are many free ways online to learn fundamentals of programming, blender, pixel art, music composition, as well as game jams or solo itch.io-scale projects. Being ready to collaborate well with teammates requires having put in non-trivial time on picking up some fundamentals before joining.

This does not need to be long or elaborate, but it is an important space to say something that could set your application apart, tell us something relevant about your journey, or reflect an understanding of our group's purpose.

Anything else you want to mention. Feel free to include an itch.io or portfolio link if you have one, though this is not required. If you have other online presence you're comfortable sharing - even if it's not game development related - such as social media, github, youtube, linkedin, etc it's also not necessary but can help as another way we can validate which submissions are from real people and not bots or redundant application submissions.
