Gail Jenkins Teaching and Mentoring Award Application
This is an annual award for a HAPS member who demonstrates use of engaging learning activities to help students truly understand and retain the more difficult Anatomy and Physiology concepts with kinesthetic and active learning strategies using inexpensive everyday props. The award is also designed to recognize those willing to mentor other instructors to also incorporate active learning to benefit more students. This award is funded by Wiley Publishers.

Award: $1000 cash award and registration waived for the HAPS Annual Conference in May. Application deadline is January 23, 2026. Note that you will need to upload a letter of support from a colleague or supervisor in order to complete this application.

How do you incorporate various engaging kinesthetic, visual, and active learning strategies using inexpensive, everyday props into your classes, especially innovative ones that you have developed and/or others that you have adapted specifically for your students? How do these learning strategies address some specific complex A&P concepts that are often difficult for students to understand and retain?*
Describe any mentoring you have done, or plan to do in the future, to encourage other instructors to incorporate these types of learning activities into their own teaching. Mentoring is different from a supervision or coordination role, and from sharing with groups of colleagues through workshops or publications. Mentoring involves a unique, one-on-one relationship with two-way sharing of insights, experiences, and reflections.*
