  • Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presents the 2026 Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship Application

  • The Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has positively impacted the community since being chartered in 1929. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority places a strong emphasis on educational development as one of its key pillars and believes in the power of education to uplift individuals and communities. As a testament to this commitment, Norfolk Alumnae offers an annual scholarship to support and recognize outstanding academic achievement and pay homage to their beloved soror, the late Mildred Dudley Peters.

    Mildred Dudley Peters was a devoted member of the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter and the first African American Supervisor for black schools in Norfolk, Virginia. In that capacity she is responsible for revising the curriculum for the teaching of history, geography and government. Mrs. Peter’s life motto was “Give your best to the world and the best will come back to you.” She embodied what it meant to be a true educator, a compassionate leader and was admired by all who were graced with her presence. This scholarship honors her legacy and commitment to the educational development of students in the Norfolk community.

    The Mildred Dudley Peters Scholarship is offered annually in the amount of $5000 to qualified high school seniors during their first semester of enrollment at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). 

    Founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Today Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has over 300,000 initiated members and more than 1000 chapters worldwide. 


    To be eligible for consideration, a scholarship applicant must

    • Be a United States Citizen, U.S. National or U.S. Permanent Resident
    • Must attend one of the five public high schools in Norfolk, Virginia
    • Attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours per semester)
    • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.7 or above on a 4.0 scale
    • Not an immediate relative (i.e. child) of a member of the Norfolk Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
  • APPLICATION CHECKLIST/VERIFICATION DOCUMENTATION


    1. Student Application which includes a 300-500 word personal essay. The original personal essay should cover the influences that helped to shape your life and your future career and personal goals.


    2. Official School Transcript Please upload the seal and signature copy in PDF format to this application.


    3. Please submit three Letters of Recommendations as indicated below:
    • Teacher Letter or other school official on school letterhead
    • School Counselor Letter on school letterhead
    • Community/Voluntary Service Letter or Employer Letter on company letterhead


    4. All applications must be submitted by Saturday, March 28, 2026.

  • I, {parentguardianName85} ,Parent/Guardian, on behalf of {name61} (“Participant Minor Child”) give permission for the local Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (the “Chapter”) to publish on the Internet or media still photographs or moving images, including, if applicable any sound recordings accompanying the images (“Images”) taken of my child during participation in Youth Initiative Program activities, without payment or any consideration and without notifying me in advance.

    I also give permission for the Chapter to highlight my child’s achievements and activities in efforts to promote the youth initiative program through newspapers, radio, TV, the web, DVDs, displays, brochures, and other types of media without payment or any consideration and without notifying me. I understand and agree that these Images will become the property of the Chapter, which shall have complete ownership of the Images. I hereby irrevocably authorize the Chapter to publish or distribute these Images for the purpose of publicizing the Chapter’s programs, including the Youth Initiative Program or for any other lawful purpose. In addition, I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished product wherein my child’s likeness appears. Additionally, I waive any rights to royalties or other compensation arising out of or related to the use of the Images.

    I hereby hold harmless and release and forever discharge the Chapter and any of its officers and members; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; its officers; National Executive Board; employees; members; representatives; agents; and assigns from any and all claims, costs, suits, actions, judgments, and expenses which my child, his/her heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, or any other persons acting on his/her behalf have or may have by reason of the use of the Images. This release specifically includes, without limitation, a complete release and discharge of any liability by virtue of any editing, distortion, alteration, or optical illusion, whether intentional or otherwise, that may occur or be produced in the taking of or editing of said Images, unless it can be shown that such was maliciously caused, produced and published solely for the purpose of subjecting my child to conspicuous ridicule, scandal, reproach, scorn, and indignity.

    I hereby certify that I am the Parent/Guardian, and I am authorized legally to give this consent, and do hereby give my consent without reservation to the foregoing on behalf of my child.
