    Connecting Delaware’s Non-Traditional Educators

We’re excited to officially launch the ROOTS Educator Network — a collaborative initiative bringing together non-traditional, micro-school, homeschool, and unconventional educators across Delaware and the Eastern Shore to share resources, ideas, and support.

Our goal is to create a statewide network of educators who are passionate about innovative learning environments — from forest schools and homesteads to community co-ops and learner-driven microschools. This network is open to all educators looking to step a bit outside of traditional schooling. Together, we can strengthen connections, amplify impact, and meet the unique educational needs of our region.

As VELA Community Connectors for the State of Delaware and Ecosystem Builders for the National Microschooling Center, we are honored to help bridge the gap in education across our state — currently ranked 45th in the nation — by fostering collaboration, empowerment, and shared growth among those leading the change.

Please take a few minutes to answer the questions below. Your input will help us:

    • Schedule intentional meetings and networking opportunities
    • Develop professional development sessions and collaborative trainings based on your requests
    • Identify common concerns, needs, and resources across our community

We’re simply collecting data right now to guide the formation of this network and ensure it truly reflects the needs of local educators. Thank you for taking part in this movement to reimagine education in Delaware!

🌱 Together, we grow stronger. Together, we empower children.

About ROOTS Farm & Forest School
ROOTS Farm & Forest School is a Delaware-based nature and community education program founded by Talon and Travis Holleman, combining hands-on learning, environmental stewardship, social-emotional learning, and self-sufficiency education. What began on their 2.7-acre homestead in Georgetown has grown into a thriving multi-campus model, with locations now in Georgetown, Milton, and Townsend (and growing). They have received several awards such as: Top 38 Women in Business in DE, Top 40 under 40 Business Leader in DE, voted Best Private School in Sussex County, Outstanding Field Educator by DAEE and more!

Together, they serve 800+ of children each year through nature-based schooling (full alternative school), homeschool enrichment, summer camps, yoga & SEL, preschool, and community programs. They currently serve ages 18mos-12yrs old with occasional teen and adult classes. They will be adding middle school years through highschool in the near future. Talon and Travis are passionate about connecting and supporting educators who share a vision for alternative, child-led, holistic, and purpose-driven education across Delaware and beyond.
