As donors shift priorities away from media development toward security and economic growth, this interactive session explores how to strengthen advocacy and fundraising for independent journalism and public interest media. Participants will test and refine advocacy arguments, share lessons learned, and review key tools — including GFMD’s new Toolkit for EU media support and DW Akademie’s State of Media Development Report — to help make a stronger case for funding.
These efforts build on initiatives such as the Media Viability Manifesto, the EU Multiannual Financial Framework submission, and the M20 Johannesburg Declaration, reaffirming the vital role of journalism as a public good.

This session will focus on strategies and tactics to strengthen the capacity of investigative journalists and media organisations to combat illicit finance, building on the FFD4 Sevilla Commitment. Participants will explore approaches to funding journalism, examine innovative financing models, and highlight opportunities for collective action — including cross-network collaboration, joint initiatives, and shared advocacy tools —to engage donors and policymakers in sustaining investigative media.
This session is particularly relevant for journalists, investigative networks, and media support organisations working on transparency, accountability, and development financing.
