Cover Letter Instructions

All applications must include a cover letter addressed to the review committee. This letter should clearly outline how the requested funds will be utilized to advance your research. Specify whether the funding will support pilot data for a future submission or if it will be used to demonstrate proof-of-principle or proof-of-concept. Be explicit about the intended use of the funds and how they will contribute to the progression of your research. Additionally, given the foundation's emphasis on innovation, highlight what makes your project innovative and why it merits consideration for funding. 2. Acknowledgment of AI Statement

Applicants for the novel brain tumor research grant must ensure that all written components of their proposal are the result of their own original work and intellectual effort. While AI tools may be used for limited, non-substantive purposes such as grammar checking, formatting, or improving clarity of phrasing, they must not be used to generate, draft, or substantively edit the scientific content, hypotheses, experimental design, data interpretation, or narrative framing of the proposal. The use of AI to produce or significantly shape these core elements would raise serious concerns about the authenticity, originality, and accountability of the application. Applicants are required to fully disclose any incidental AI use in their methodology statement. Proposals found to have relied on AI for substantive content creation may be deemed noncompliant and disqualified from consideration, as the grant review process relies on the applicant’s independent expertise, creativity, and rigor to advance novel research in brain tumor biology and treatment.

3. Proposal

Research Proposal Instructions

The research proposal should follow the following format. This document requires manual upload.
1. Lay Summary (limited to three sentences)
2. Research Proposal and Strategy (limited to 5 pages), may include figures in an appendix that are not included in the proposal page limit
  1. Significance - state the research problem, current state of knowledge, and potential contributions of the research to the field. Explain the importance of the problem or critical barrier to progress in the field that the proposed project addresses. Explain how the proposed project will improve scientific knowledge, technical capability, and/or clinical practice in the area of brain cancer research. Describe how the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive this field will be changed if the proposed aims are achieved. It should include a critical evaluation of the literature and identify the gap that this project will fill. The literature review should provide only that information that directly pertains to the scientific need for your project and should reflect up-to-date knowledge of the field. The specific aims and hypotheses should be included at the end of this section.
  2. Innovation - explain how the application challenges and seeks to shift current research or clinical practice paradigms. Describe any novel theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation or interventions to be developed or used, and any advantage over existing methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions.
  3. Approach - describe the overall strategy, methodology (including study design and population), and analyses to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Describe how you plan to carry out the research. Include details related to specific methodology and explain why the proposed methods are the best to accomplish study goals. Describe any novel concepts, approaches, tools, or techniques. Your research methods should relate directly to the specific aims. This section is critical for demonstrating that you have developed a clear, organized, and thoughtful study design that tests the central hypothesis. State how the data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted. Describe statistical techniques that will be used. Include a proposed timeline for completing the work. Discuss potential problems, alternative strategies, and benchmarks for success anticipated to achieve the aims. If the project is in the early stages of development, describe strategy to establish feasibility.
