  • The goal of the Royce & Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship is to provide community leaders from developing nations — particularly within the Asia-Pacific region — with practical training and experience in Australia, aligned with one or more of The Rotary Foundation’s Seven Areas of Focus.

    The knowledge and skills gained are intended to be applied within the recipient’s home community or organisation, creating lasting social and economic benefits.

    Instructions for Completing the Initial Application Form
  • Before a scholarship application can progress, an Initial Application must be fully completed, signed, submitted, and approved by the Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship Committee.

    We've outlined the information you'll need to prepare for and complete the initial application form accurately and efficiently.

    • Involvement in community development activities (if applicable)

    5. Supporting Commentary
    • Comments from a person who knows the applicant well
    • Comments from the applicant’s employer, mentor, or supervisor (as applicable)

    6. Host Rotary Club Information
    • Details of the Host Rotary Club’s past and planned involvement with the applicant, their community, or their organisation
    • Endorsement by the Host Rotary Club (and the applicant’s Home Rotary Club, if applicable)

    7. Certification and Endorsements
    • Applicant’s certification and signature
    • Endorsement by the Rotarian primarily responsible for the scholarship
    • Endorsement by the Host Rotary Club President.

    The initial application must be approved before a detailed application can be submitted.

    A representative from the Royce & Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship Committee is available to assist with preparing the initial application if required.

    This form should be completed by the Australian Host Rotary Club and submitted to the Royce & Jean Abbey Scholarship Committee for approval.

    When preparing the detailed application, the Host Club is encouraged to consult with the designated Scholarship Committee representative for guidance and support throughout the process.

  • 9. HOST ROTARY CLUB'S INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT AND THE APPLICANT'S COMMUNITY/ORGANISATION

  • The Host Club must have an ongoing relationship with and knowledge of the scholarship applicant's community or organisation. The Host Club will be required to provide follow-up reports to ascertain whether the objectives of the scholarship have been met, and that the community or organisation has benefited from the scholarship. 

  • 10. APPLICANT'S CERTIFICATION AND CLUB ENDORSEMENT

  • If I receive a Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship, I agree

    • To learn about Rotary International and fulfil the responsibilities that come with this scholarship.
    • To help promote Rotary International wherever possible and to permit The Rotary Foundation to use my name and all photographs and written reports generated through any of my activities related to my scholarship.
    • I am responsible for gaining admission at my assigned study institution, obtaining the required visa/s, making appropriate travel arrangements, and completing all pre-departure requirements.
    • I must abide by any decisions made by The Rotary Foundation Trustees concerning my scholarship.
    • I will embrace Rotary's spirit of volunteerism and engage in volunteer activities for the duration of the scholarship, through the term abroad, to a post-scholarship commitment in my local community.
    • I will fulfil the requirements of the Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship, as communicated to me by the Host Club.
    • My scholarship may be revoked for any of the following reasons:
      • Inability to secure admission in a programme nominated by the Host Club and approved by the Scholarship Committee
      • Evidence of misconduct
      • Failure to submit required reports on time
      • Significant changes in the Scholarship programme without the consent of the Host Club and/or the Scholarship Committee
      • Lack of English language skills
      • Failure to adequately fulfil scholarship duties
      • Failure to follow the directions of the Scholarship Committee or the Host Club
      • Failure to provide my Host Club and host Rotarians with my current information, including mailing address, telephone numbers, and email address, at all times
      • Or any contingency that prevents me from fulfilling all the obligations of the scholarship. 
    • Revocation of the scholarship may cause all payments to cease and may make me liable for the return of payments previously provided.
    • The Scholarship Committee, Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation, the study institutions, and individual Rotary Clubs and Rotarians are in no way liable for my personal welfare or responsible for enabling me to pursue my studies beyond the scholarship period.
    • The Scholarship Committee, District 9800, Rotary International, and The Rotary Foundation assume no responsibility or obligation beyond providing the scholarship funds.
    • The Royce and Jean Abbey Scholarship Committee, the Rotary Club of Essendon, District 9800 and The Rotary Foundation may use my image for reporting and promotional purposes for the benefit of the scholarship and The Rotary Foundation.

  • 11. Applicant Host Club Checklist

    This list is to assist the Host Rotary Club in completing everything required for this application.
  • General Guidelines

    In considering the application, the Scholarship Committee will assess:
    • The strength of the relationship between the Host Club and the scholarship applicant's community or organisation
    • The scholarship applicant's:
      • position within his/her community
      • capacity to handle up to three (3) months of practical training away from his/her family and community
      • fluency and familiarity with the English language
      • capacity to learn and then impart knowledge gained to his/her community or organisation.
    • The quality and content of the initial and detailed applications submitted
    • Whether the proposed itinerary and training programme will provide practical experience of benefit to the applicant's home community or organisation, and be capable of achieving the objectives set out in the initial application
    • The financial support available to the scholarship recipient and his/her family for the duration of the scholarship.
  • Do exceptional circumstances exist that may justify approval of this application, even if not all eligibility criteria are met?
    If so, please ensure these circumstances are clearly explained within the application or in an accompanying cover letter.

    Note 1: Approval of any application is at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee, and is subject to formal endorsement by the District 9800 Foundation Committee and The Rotary Foundation.

    Note 2: Applicants are ineligible if they are in breach of the Rotary Conflict of Interest Policy (outlined above).
