• Petition Against The Asphalt Plant At Cole Green Lane, WGC – Safeguard Our Community & Local Environment

Please fill out the form to sign the petition
  • We, the undersigned residents of Welwyn Garden City and surrounding communities, strongly oppose the operation of the Asphalt Plant at the B.P. Mitchell Inert Recycling Centre, Cole Green Lane, Welwyn Garden City, SG14 2NR

This facility is currently active having not been included on any previous planning application.

The Asphalt Plant is the cause of ongoing noise, fumes and odours affecting nearby residents and the local environment.

    🚨 Key Concerns:

    • Air Pollution: Asphalt production releases harmful particulates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can exacerbate respiratory conditions and degrade air quality.

    • Noise and Traffic Disruption: The Asphalt Plant is already having a serious impact. Heavy lorries and on-site operations generate persistent noise, dust, and debris on local roads. Bitumen processing adds further disturbance, including a strong, lingering smell that affects air quality and daily life. Activity often begins early in the morning, disrupting nearby homes, schools, and green spaces. Continued operation will only intensify the harm.

    • Environmental Impact: The plant threatens local ecosystems, including the cherished Nature Reserve 'The Commons', a vital green space for wildlife and community recreation. Potential contamination and habitat disruption could irreversibly damage this protected area.

    • Community Wellbeing: The current operation contradicts the town’s commitment to sustainable development and undermines efforts to preserve our garden city heritage.

    📢 Our Demands:

We call on the local council, planning authorities, and environmental regulators to:

    1. Ensure the proper full planning process is followed, including public consultation, environmental scrutiny, and legal compliance before any further operations are permitted.

    2. Conduct a full environmental impact assessment, including public health and traffic studies.

    3. Engage with the community transparently, ensuring our voices are heard before any decisions are made.

This petition represents a unified stand for clean air, safe roads, and responsible development. We urge decision-makers to uphold planning law and prioritise long-term community wellbeing over short-term industrial gain. The persistent noise, disruption, and environmental harm caused by the Asphalt Plant are incompatible with the character of our town and the protection of its natural assets. Respect for the local environment, and for the rights of residents to live in a healthy, peaceful setting must come first.

Sign below to protect our town, our health, and our future.
