On the afternoon of December 4, 1875, William M. "Boss" Tweed was furloughed from his prison cell on Ludlow Street to have dinner with his wife and family. When his guards went to check on him, they found the city's most notorious political fixer missing--allegedly he'd snuck out the back door wearing one of his wife's dresses. So began a multi-month manhunt that was one of the biggest stories of the Gilded Age.
