  • The goal of the Royce & Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship is to provide community leaders from developing nations — particularly within the Asia-Pacific region — with practical training and experience in Australia, aligned with one or more of The Rotary Foundation’s Seven Areas of Focus.

    The knowledge and skills gained are intended to be applied within the recipient’s home community or organisation, creating lasting social and economic benefits.

  • This detailed application outlines the proposed training or learning program, itinerary, budget, and bank account details.

    It should be completed by the Host Rotary Club, in consultation with a member of the Scholarship Committee, after the initial application has been submitted and formally approved by the Committee.

  • Please attach a separate document in the form of a calendar or schedule that includes:

    1. A chronological list of planned activities
    2. Knowledge or experiences to be gained during each activity
    3. Explanation of how each activity or experience relates to the objectives outlined in the initial application
    4. Transportation details, including contact information for responsible persons
    5. Accommodation details, including venue, contact information, and the name of the person(s) responsible.

    When preparing the schedule, allow sufficient time for additional activities such as: 

    • Acclimatisation and shopping for necessities
    • Travel between accommodation and training venues
    • On-site or venue visits
    • Free time (allow up to two days per week)
    • Social and cultural activities
    • Time allocated for the interim and final report writing
    • Visits to Rotary Clubs or Rotary-related events.

    It is essential that all planned activities directly support and align with the objectives outlined in the initial application.

    2. Name of training/education institution and relevant department, including contact details 
    3. Subjects and modules (if relevant) to be undertaken 
    4. Assessment to be undertaken (if any)
    5. Qualification to be achieved (if any)
    6. Relevance to the objectives set out in the initial application.

    Up to USD$9,700.00 is available for each scholarship (*3% deducted for administrative fees).

  • 4. Checklist for Applicant Host Club

    For the assistance of the Host Club in preparing and completing this application.
  • General Guidelines

  • In considering the application, the Scholarship Committee will assess:

    • the strength of the relationship between the Host Club and the applicant's community or organisation
    • the applicant's position within his/her community
    • the applicant's capacity to handle up to three (3) months of practical training away from his/her family and community
    • the applicant's fluency and familiarity with the English language
    • the applicant's capacity to learn and to then impart the knowledge gained to his/her community or organisation
    • the quality and content of the initial and detailed applications submitted
    • whether the proposed itinerary and training/learning programme will meet the objectives set out in the initial application
    • the financial support available to the scholarship recipient and his/her family for the duration of the scholarship.
  • Do exceptional circumstances exist that may justify approval of this application, even if not all eligibility criteria are met?

    If so, please ensure these circumstances are clearly explained within the application or in an accompanying cover letter.

    Note 1: Approval of any application is at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee, and is subject to formal endorsement by the District 9800 Foundation Committee and The Rotary Foundation.

    Note 2: Applicants are ineligible if they are in breach of the Rotary Conflict of Interest Policy (as per checklist in the initial application).
