Clement Clark Moore--whose farm "Chelsea" gave its name to our modern-day neighborhood--is best known today for his poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" (aka 'Twas the Night Before Christmas). In that poem, Moore combined Dutch and English notions of Santa Claus and created a huge portion of modern holiday. He did this just a few blocks away from the place where, a generation later, Harper's Weekly would introduce the world Thomas Nast's vision of the jolly old elf who is now the universal Santa figure.
This stroll through Chelsea will talk about Moore, Nast, and other holidays connections, as well as other important area history from the founding of the General Seminary (also by Moore) to the birth of the English Muffin. In between, we'll see holiday decor, walk a bit on the High Line, and otherwise soak in the spirit of the season. This should be a fun walk -- with plenty of places to pop into if the weather turns cold!
