New Jersey Permit to Carry (PTC) Qualification Course

This course is designed to meet the current training and qualification requirements for the New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun, as established by the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.

Participants will receive comprehensive instruction covering both the legal responsibilities and practical firearm skills required to safely and lawfully carry a handgun in New Jersey.

Course Curriculum Includes:

• New Jersey Use of Force Lecture
A detailed review of New Jersey laws governing the use of force and deadly force, including legal standards, justification, avoidance, duty to retreat considerations, and post-incident responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on decision-making, articulation, and the serious legal consequences associated with improper use of force.

• Scenario-Based Discussion
Instructor-led discussion of real-world scenarios to reinforce lawful decision-making, threat assessment, situational awareness, and judgment under stress. This portion is intended to bridge legal theory with practical application.

• Dry-Fire Training
Structured dry-fire drills focusing on firearm safety, grip, stance, trigger control, presentation from the holster (if applicable), and safe weapon handling. This portion prepares students for the live-fire qualification while reinforcing safe gun-handling fundamentals.

• Live-Fire Qualification
Participants will complete the required live-fire qualification course of fire in accordance with current NJSP standards. All shooting will be conducted under direct instructor supervision with strict adherence to range safety protocols.

Additional Important Information:

This course is not a beginner firearms class. Participants must arrive with a working knowledge of their firearm and safe handling procedures.

All firearms must be NJ-compliant.

Successful completion of this course does not guarantee issuance of a Permit to Carry; approval is determined solely by the New Jersey State Police and the applicant’s local issuing authority.
