Prep & Safety

Park on a level, solid surfaceSet parking brakePop the hoodRemove oil fill capRemove oil dipstickGather tools: Ratchet, Socket (14-19mm), Oil Filter Wrench, Funnel, Gloves, Rags, Jack, Jack Stands, Oil Catch PanConfirm oil type & quantity (owner's manual, oil cap, or Google)
Lift & Secure

Position floor jack under frame (usually behind radiator)Lift car until you can slide under comfortablyPlace jack stands under driver/passenger sides near front wheel wellsDouble-check stability before crawling under
Drain Old Oil

Locate drain boltUse ratchet or wrench (lefty-loosy)Break torque (use cheater bar or hand sledge if needed)Catch oil in pan - expect splash zoneInspect drain plugReplace crush washerReinstall plug by hand, then torque to 29 ft-lbs or "snug but not Hulk-tight"Wipe up any spills
Replace Oil Filter

Locate oil filterRemove by hand or with filter wrench (lefty-loosy)Catch drips in panMatch new filter gasket sizeApply fresh oil to gasketInstall new filter (hand-tight or gently snug with tool)Wipe surrounding area
Add New Oil

Insert funnel into fill capPour correct oil type and amountReinstall oil cap and dipstickCheck dipstick 3-5 times for levelStart engine and let idleShut off engineLower car safelyRecheck dipstick 2-4 timesTop off if needed (but DO NOT OVERFILL)
Final Steps

Close hoodClean tools and workspacePour used oil into empty containersRecycle oil at auto parts store or WalmartReset oil life indicator (see instructions below)
Resetting Oil Life (Honda Accord Example)

Turn ignition to "on" (DO NOT START ENGINE)Access menu and scroll to "Engine Oil Life"Press & hold Select/Reset for 10 secondsRelease, then press & hold again until it resets to 100%
