The Very Popular Theatre Company presents Mamma Mia! Get ready to bring the heat of a Greek island paradise to the stage! Over 65 million people around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story, and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show.

With a book by Catherine Johnson and music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, this production is a true theatrical phenomenon. The musical features the timeless storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless hits, including "Dancing Queen," "Super Trouper," "The Winner Takes It All," and "Voulez-Vous," weaving them into a sunny, funny tale that unfolds on a Greek island paradise.

The story follows a young woman, Sophie, who dreams of a perfect white wedding. On the eve of her big day, she attempts to discover the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle. Her search brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. As the chaos ensues, Sophie’s mother, Donna, must confront her past while reuniting with her former bandmates, the Dynamos.

This is an opportunity to join a spectacular production that celebrates friendship, identity, and the power of love. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated company to create this unforgettable story of laughter, romance, and having the time of your life.

PRODUCTION DATES

Applicants must be 18+ and commit to being available for both the production week and a two-week season. All shows will be performed at The Star Gold Coast.

**Note all performers must have a base on the Gold Coast, QLD, or be willing to commute from Brisbane or similar.

• Production week commences 31st August 2026
• Final performance 20th September 2026

REHEARSALS

• Rehearsals will commence Tuesday August 18 - Sunday August 30 2026
• All rehearsals held in the Gold Coast area
• Please look over the rehearsal and production schedules in the brief carefully and notify the production team of any clashes that you have with any rehearsal or performance calls. It is important to be organised and transparent about conflicting commitments. After the show has been cast there will be no room for conflicts or changes to the schedule.

COMPENSATION

Principal artists will be engaged under a weekly fee to be confirmed
Ensemble artists will receive an honorarium of AUD $2,000

AUDITIONS

The audition process will comprise of an initial video submission. All successful applicants will be invited to an in-person audition on Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 in Brisbane. You must be available for both of these days if required.

All auditionees must be aged 18 years or over at the time of the callbacks. We are looking for a diverse cast of performers. All ethnicities and gender types are encouraged to apply for any roles.

First round auditions will be via video submission to be received before Monday March 30 at 11:59pm. 

We ask you to record a song in the style of the show. Please do not perform a song from the show.

IN PERSON CALL BACKS 

Those selected for the second round of auditions will be invited to attend an in-person callback.

In-person callbacks will be run by the creative team in group settings, with auditionees required to learn choreography & dance, followed by singing song which you shall be sent in advance, and potentially, read scenes from the show (again which shall be given in advance).

Further information and requirements for these auditions will be sent on invitation of callback.

Sophie Sheridan

Female, Caucasian,18-20, a very special young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has a wild, zany spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Strong pop belt with upper mix.

Tanya

Female, Any Ethnicity, late 30s-mid 40s, a former singer in the "Dynamos". Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty. Actor who sings. Mezzo belt.

Rosie
Female, Any Ethnicity, late 30s-mid 40s, also a former singer in the "Dynamos" who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, bit of a clown. Actress who sings – Alto/Mezzo.

Sam Carmichael
Male, Caucasian, 40-45, may be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Bari/tenor.

Harry Bright
Male, Caucasian, 40-45, may be Sophie’s father. British financier, wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Actor who sings. Baritenor. Strong English accent.

Sky
Male, Any Ethnicity, mid-late 20s, Sophie’s fiancé. Athletic, very attractive – has given  up his life as a successful young businessman in order to make over Donna’s taverna and marry Sophie. Strong singer. Tenor.

Ali
Female, Any Ethnicity, 18-25, Sophie's friend. Impulsive and fun. Should contrast to Lisa and Sophie. Should sing and dance well. Featured ensemble role.

Lisa
Female, Any Ethnicity, 18-25, Sophie's friend who arrives to be a bridesmaid. Very energetic and kooky. Should sing and dance well. Featured ensemble role.

Pepper

Male, Any Ethnicity, early to mid 20s, Sky's friend. Helps run the hotel. Charming, handsome and a womanizer. Must be a good mover/dancer. Preferably with Russian toe touches. Acrobatic skills a plus. Bari/Tenor. Featured ensemble role.

Eddie
Male, Any Ethnicity, early to mid-20s, another friend of Sky's and a hotel worker. Laid-back, easygoing. Must be a mover/dancer role. Bari/tenor. Featured ensemble role.

Any Ethnicity. Excellent singers with great pop/rock voices. Very good dancers (acrobatics and partnering skills a plus). Looking for dynamic, diverse and interesting types/personalities. We are seeking full range of voices including excellent low-reaching Altos, experienced Mezzos and Sopranos, Basses, Baritones & Tenors**
