MAKE UP, ATTENDANCE, AND INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICIES

    • ATTENDANCE:
      • Consistent, punctual attendance is expected for the entire semester, though it is understood absences may be necessary due to illness, family emergency, or other unforeseen reason.
      • For the health and well-being of all in the class, students should not attend class if they are sick.
    • ABSENCES:
      • Student's absence: please inform the teacher of any absences by emailing info@pianostorytellers.com or texting 646-373-4374 prior to the class.
      • Teacher's absence: Should a class be cancelled due to the teacher's absence, a make up class will be offered at a time determined by the teacher, which will likely not take place during the regular class day/time. The make up class will likely take place online (Zoom) and not in-person.
    • MAKE UPS:
      • No make up classes are available. Students who are absent are expected to review the week's practice video to catch up. There is no option to "Zoom" into In-Person class.
    • INCLEMENT WEATHER: Classes may be moved online (Zoom) in the event of inclement weather. Notification will be sent by email.

DURING / DROP OFF / PICK UP

    • DROP OFF: Students will be permitted to enter the building only 2-3 minutes prior to the start of class and no earlier. (Classes are scheduled back-to-back with a short period in between to prepare for the following class.) Please arrive on time as the door will be locked once class begins.
    • PICK UP: Parents/guardians should not ring the doorbell at pickup, as the door will remain locked during class and unlocked at the end of class. Students must be picked up on time. Children will only be released to the parent/guardian at the front door of the building. Children will not be released if the parent/guardian is at the gate, sidewalk, curb, or car.
    • SAFETY: To ensure the safety of all students, the door will remain locked once class starts and will only be unlocked at the end of class.
    • WAITING DURING CLASS: This is a drop-off class only. Parents/guardians are not permitted to wait on-site during class.
    • BEHAVIOR: Students as well as parents/guardians must display a high level of respect in all interactions with the teacher, other students, and other parents/guardians at all times. Should a student's behavior be disruptive to others while at the studio, a warning will be given to the student and discussed with the parent/guardian. Further incidences could lead to dismissal from the program without the possibility of a refund.
    • OTHER: Shoes must be removed upon entering the classroom.

    HEALTH PROTOCOLS AND POLICIES

    • Parents agree to keep their child home if their child is sick, contagious, or unwell.
    • In the event a student appears unwell during class (e.g. coughing, nauseous, runny nose, etc.) a mask may be required at the discretion of the teacher, and the parent may be called to pick their child up early.
    • Students must use hand sanitizer prior to the start of class. Sanitizer will be provided.
    • Parents and students should be prepared for classes to move online (Zoom) at any point during the semester due to teacher's illness, inclement weather, etc, and at short-notice.
    • Please note: these policies are subject to change.

ZOOM CLASS TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS, POLICIES, AND EXPECTATIONS

    • EXPECTATIONS: Classes will move online (Zoom) as necessary during the semester (e.g. illness-related classroom closure, teacher is sick, inclement weather, etc.) Parents and students must be prepared for this, and that the decision and notification could be sent with short-notice.
    • TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
      • Two devices such as an iPad, tablet, smartphone, laptop, etc, are required to attend class. You can also use a webcam connected to a laptop as the second device. Preferably, one of the devices will have a larger screen, e.g. tablet or laptop. Instructions on where to situate the devices will be sent before the semester begins.
      • A high-speed cable or Fios internet connection. A minimum internet speed of 25mbps download / 5mbps upload is required. Test the speed of one of your devices from where the piano/keyboard is located to make sure you meet the requirement. It takes less than one minute. (You only need to test one device, as the required internet speed can be shared between both devices.)
      • To avoid screen freezes or poor connection, others in the household should not stream video content (e.g. YouTube, Netflix) or download/upload large files during class.
      • Zoom must be installed on both devices, and it must be updated promptly when new versions are released to ensure it will work properly.
      • Devices should be fully charged before class.
    • DURING ZOOM CLASS:
      • Students are not allowed to chat or touch their devices once class has begun, unless asked to do so by the teacher.
      • Students will be "spotlighted" at times during class. This means the student will be enlarged on everyone's screens. This allows: 1) interactivity between students and the teacher, 2) the teacher to give direct, one-on-one feedback and support to the student.
      • To respect the privacy of all students, filming or recording the class is not allowed.
    • LOGGING ON: Students should log in to Zoom a few minutes prior to their class starting and have their devices in place.
    • PARENTS/CAREGIVERS OBSERVING OR ASSISTING DURING CLASS: It is not required for a parent/caregiver to attend a Zoom class with their child. However, parents/caregivers are more than welcome to sit in on their child's class. A parent's direct assistance to their child during class may promote better learning outcomes, however, if it seems to negatively impact a child's progress, the teacher will discuss with the parent privately and may advise for the child to attend the class solo.
    • STUDENT AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS' BEHAVIOR:
      • Students and parents/caregivers/other household members, must display a high level of respect in all interactions with the teacher, other students, and any other participants at all times.
      • Should a student's behavior be disruptive to others, a warning will be given and discussed privately with the parent/caregiver.
      • The teacher reserves the right to disable a student's video and audio without warning for the remainder of a class should a behavior, visual, or sound captured on-screen be deemed inappropriate for other participants to see or hear, e.g. foul or harmful language, full or partial nudity, physical discipline, etc. This includes visuals or sounds from other members in the student's household or in the student's home environment. Should this be the case, the student can continue to participate in the class by following along, but will not be able to interact with the teacher or other students. The teacher will then discuss privately with the student's parent/caregiver.
      • Further incidences of disruptive or harmful behavior could lead to dismissal from the program without the possibility of a refund.

    OTHER GENERAL POLICIES

    • COMMUNICATIONS: Communications from the teacher will be sent primarily via email - info@pianostorytellers.com; likewise, email is the best way to be in touch with the teacher. Please make sure to add info@pianostorytellers.com to your "safelist," and read all emails thoroughly.
    • PIANO/KEYBOARD REQUIREMENT: It is strongly recommended for students to have either a piano in good playing condition or a digital piano with fully weighted keys, which typically only come in full-size, 88-notes (keys). At a minimum, however, students are required to have a 61-note keyboard to play on at home by the second class.
    • PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS: To get the most out of the program, help your child develop a love of piano from the start, and build your child's confidence in playing, practice is essential. For ages 5-6, a minimum of 2-3 times a week, 5-10 minutes is expected, and for ages 6-8, a minimum of 2-4 times a week, 5-15 minutes.
    • OTHER:
      • Students should come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn.
      • Students must keep their fingernails short.
