De-escalating and Redirecting Students Through the Life Space Interview
By Ryan Harold, Director of Safety and Security - St. Luke’s School
"Establishing effective organizational systems and structures is essential for supporting positive student behavior. Clear routines, proactive strategies, and well-defined processes help staff identify, triage, and prevent situations before they escalate.
The Life Space Interview (LSI)—originally developed by Cornell University—serves as a practical framework for fostering student self-regulation and reflection. The approach uses students’ responses to challenging situations as teaching moments, guiding them to better understand their emotions, choices, and behavior patterns.
Educators can implement the Life Space Interview as a verbal de-escalation, redirection, and behavior support tool to promote growth, accountability, and emotional learning.
Note: This training is not affiliated with or endorsed by Cornell University."

Disrupting Bias

"Despite best efforts and intentions, bias frequently shows up in community groups and spaces. Implicit bias in particular can create challenges when working to move forward with and grow inclusive and equitable practices. This workshop will explore the definition, formation, and impact of implicit bias and other related terms, discuss how to recognize and confront microaggressions, and impart concrete strategies for intervention (including opportunity to practice!) when encountering these situations in real life."
