------- ------- -------
In this part talk, part workshop series, writers are invited to listen, exchange, and dream care-full approaches to publishing in times of uncertainty and creative possibility.
Part One: A talk by Denise Shanté Brown
Centering ways of writing and making that honor nonlinearity, intuition, disability, and interdependence, Part One invites participants to journey within Denise Shanté’s publications that carry a commitment to care—from dreamseed to manifestation to distribution. Space for questions and dialogue will be included.
The talk will cover topics and experiences about:
• creative writing rituals and care practices
• multimodal experiences and multiple access points
• self-publishing and remaining outside the mainstream
• collaborations with independent publishers, editors, and print studios
• design, form, and materiality
• resources and support systems
• key lessons, mistakes, and pivots
Part Two: A workshop by Denise Shanté Brown
Part Two, a workshop guided by Denise Shanté, will be an intimate session for 10 participants. Together, we'll share our publishing works-in-process for a collective dreaming experience that invites possibility and generous moments of exchange. We'll do this through the generation of “what if” questions in response to the specific part of your work you want us to dream about.
You’re invited to come with your ideas, sketches, notes, images—anything that speaks to something you want to write and make public. Maybe you're stuck on what form you want it to take. Maybe you're wondering how to make it a community experience. This practice is an opportunity for us to collectively nourish one another’s dreams and explore the mode of “imagination collaboration” rather than constantly focusing on feedback and critique.
Access + Supports
• ASL will be available during Part One and available upon request for Part Two.
• “Access Doula” — Support will be provided to individuals for both sessions should you need help with accessibility features in our zoom gatherings.
• Presencing practice with moments to share access needs.
• Scheduled break with agency to take additional breaks as your bodymind needs.
• Welcome to have cameras on or off as desired.
• Nonverbal shares in the chat are also welcome.
About the author + guide
Denise Shanté Brown is a multidimensional designer, creative co-conspirator, and intuitive writer. She has a creative lineage of seeding and stewarding collectives and networks, guiding community-led projects, (self)publishing experimental writings, and trying to make the way easy with other designers and writers who are devoted to shaping communities of care that will also care for us. Through a creative social practice rooted in co-dreaming, multimodality, and sensorial knowledge, Denise Shanté cultivates embodied experiments where (dis)abled storytellers and worldmakers can collectively dream, design, write, and feel the futures we long for and love. She’s a caregiver to her sweet cat, Nora, while navigating everyday survival with chronic illnesses and a commitment to sobriety.
