Vestah W. Blye Scholarship

The Morgan State University Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Alumni Chapter awards scholarships to eligible high school students who have been accepted to the University, as well as to undergraduate students currently attending Morgan State University. This scholarship is named in honor of Vestah W. Blye, a proud member of the Morgan State University Class of 1939. She was a charter member of the chapter and served the Morgan's Alumni Association for more than 50 years, both as a member of the Board of Directors and as a dedicated alumna. The scholarship celebrates her outstanding commitment, service, and dedication to advancing the mission and ideals of the chapter, as well as her many volunteer efforts in support of the University’s educational mission.
Eligibility
- All applicants must be either current Morgan State University students or graduating seniors from a Washington, DC area high school who have been accepted to Morgan for the 2026-2027 academic school year.
- Applicants must also meet the following criteria: be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident with a valid visa; be a resident of Washington, DC, or live in a surrounding area (Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Arlington County, or the City of Alexandria).
- Applicants must be a full-time student (12 credit hours or more) who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale; and demonstrate a commitment to community service through active volunteerism.

Scholarship Award

Each scholarship recipient will receive a one-time award of $2,000 for the 2026–2027 school year. The award will be paid directly to the student’s account at Morgan State University from the Vestah W. Blye Scholarship Fund, managed by the Morgan State University Foundation.
Award Selection

Applications will be scored based on the following categories: Academic Achievement, Student Resume, Community Service Impact Statement, Personal Essay, and Letters of Recommendation. The Student Resume should provide information on extracurricular activities, awards and honors, leadership roles, community service, and employment history. Scholarships are awarded on a non-discriminatory basis.

All scholarship applications must be submitted by April 30, 2026.

Letter of Recommendation #1*

Letter of Recommendation #1 must be written by a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, professor, or academic dean. The letter should include the recommender’s name, phone number, and email address, preferably on company or organization letterhead.

Letter of Recommendation #2 can be written by a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, professor, or academic dean, mentor, coach, community or faith-based leader, volunteer coordinator, employer, internship supervisor, etc. The letter should include the recommender’s full name, phone number, and email address, and should preferably be on official company, school, or organization letterhead.
