Project Description
LA Commons is searching for 2 lead artists to work with a core Youth Arts Apprentices (Age 15-25) to collect community stories, and to design utility box artworks to share and promote environmental action themes in Pacoima. The youth apprentice team members will meet periodically and also be paid a stipend for their work. LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply acquisition, workshop space and recruiting the Youth Apprentice team. With local community organizations and partners, this project aims to transform public spaces in Pacoima through community-centered-art. This project will engage local artists, youth apprentices, and community members to create utility box artworks that reflect Pacoima’s unique stories, values, and culture.
Each lead artist will lead the storygathering, design and painting process for 2-3 utility boxes with assistance from 2 youth apprentices aged 15-25.
The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in this project will be:
1. To participate in story/image gathering process and events with the Core Youth Arts Team to inform the designs for the artwork
2. To mentor the Core Youth Arts apprentices to foster youth in the development of skills in visual art and design
3. To complete and refine the designs for the utility boxes in line with the project goals
4. To lead the team to create and complete the temporary work of public art within the project timeline.
Requirements:
1. Experience in visual arts and public art
2. Experience working with youth and community
3. Familiarity, experience and connection with Pacoima and surrounding communities
Compensation:
$5000 stipend for each Lead Artist
