Project Description
LA Commons is searching for 4 lead artists to work each with 2 Youth Arts Apprentices (Age 15-25) to collect community stories, and to design a mural panel on Van Nuys Blvd. in Pacoima. The Youth Artists team members will meet periodically and also be paid a stipend for their work. LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply acquisition, workshop space and recruiting the Youth Arts team. With local community organizations and partners, this project aims to transform public spaces in Pacoima through community-centered-art that uplifts neighborhood environmental initiatives. This project will engage each local artist and youth apprentices, and community members to each create a mural panel (4 total) that reflect Pacoima’s unique stories, values, and culture.
The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in this project will be:
1. To participate in story/image gathering process and events with the Core Youth Arts Team to inform the designs for the artwork
2. To mentor the Core Youth Arts team to foster youth in the development of skills in visual art and design
3. To design and refine mural design and painting reflecting Pacoima and environmental themes to further local environmental initiatives within the project timeline
4. To lead the team in the creating and completing the temporary work of public art.
Requirements:
1. Experience in visual arts and public art
2. Experience working with youth and community
3. Familiarity, experience and connection with Pacoima and surrounding communities
Compensation:
$2500 stipend for each Lead Artist
