  • Welcome to this study! We are investigating the effectiveness of Swedish comprehensible input for beginners inside of a video game. Comprehensible input is foreign language material that is made understandable using context clues like images, facial expressions, tone of voice, and other hints.

Please read the following information before continuing.

    Instructions

    • This study and the game are not made for use on mobile devices. Please use a laptop/desktop computer. It is possible to use any browser, but I recommend Chrome, Safari, or Brave. Firefox and Edge may experience issues with one assessment question.
    • You may play the game and move using a mouse/trackpad or a keyboard. You may switch at any time.
    • You need to listen to dialogue during the game and during the assessment, so please participate from a quiet environment or use headphones.

    Procedure

    • The study includes:
      • demographic questions (3-5 minutes)
      • standardized assessments of language learning experiences and opinions (5-7 minutes)
      • a video game prototype (at least 20 minutes, but can play longer)
      • standardized assessment post-game (2-3 minutes)
      • a post-test about Swedish (15-25 minutes)
    • The study will take between 45 minutes and 60 minutes to complete, assuming 20 minutes of play time.
    • The game must be played for at least 20 minutes, but you are allowed to play until you finish the game.
    • There is no further action required after clicking Submit.

    Consent

The purpose of the study is to research language learning using comprehensible input and video games.

This research is affiliated with the department of Educational Technology at the Saarland University. The responsible researcher (Olivia Bolton) is available for questions concerning the study. If you would like more information, would like to know about the results of the study, or would like to withdraw from the study, you may email her any time at olbo00003@stud.uni-saarland.de .

Data will be gathered completely anonymously by Jotform and securely stored for at least 1 year. Data will be used to complete a Master's thesis. Individual data will not be shared with third parties.

I was informed that the study includes demographic questions, standardized assessments, and a post-test about Swedish. The whole study will last a minimum of 45 minutes, but can last longer depending on individual speed and play time.

I was informed that participation is voluntary, and that I can rescind my consent for any reason and that I can also cancel participation at any time.

I was informed that all data collection will be anonymous and secured by Jotform, that the collected data will only be used for the given research purpose, that data will not be shared with third persons and that data will be stored for at least 1 year.

  • Game Instructions

    • You must play for at least 20 minutes, but you can play for as long as you want. There is a timer below the game window.
    • If you get stuck, check below the timer for tips and advice.
    • Ensure your computer volume is on and you are in a quiet environment.
    • There will be a post-test after the game. The post-test has three parts.
      1. An assessment of your opinions about learning with the game. There are eight questions.
      2. Reading and listening to Swedish numbers 0 to 10. There are four activities.
        • Find numbers in a paragraph
        • Listen to and recognize numbers in a conversation
        • Read and recognize numbers in a sentence
        • Order numbers from 0 to 10
      3. Reading and listening to Swedish words and sentences. You will be given a context video from the game for each question, so there is no need to memorize anything. There are twelve questions.
    • You will not have to speak or write in Swedish.
    • You do not have to take notes.

    • Choose "Item."
    • Choose "Ordbok."
    • Choose "Nummer," "Ord," or "Fras."
    • Choose a number/word/sentence to hear it and read the translation. Repeat the word to hear it again.

    • While in the forest, you can open and close the Minimap using the "M" key.
    • You are the orange dot.
    • The safehouse is purple.
    • Mushroom locations do no appear on the map! You'll have to find them yourself ;)
(If you can't find them, check everywhere including a hidden passageway south of the safehouse.)

    Jails

    • Oh no, you got caught and ended up in jail! But don't worry, there is always a way out.
    • Look around, listen carefully, and use your context clues to escape.
    • Each jail is a little different, but they are all designed to help you learn to count in Swedish.
    • If you don't understand at first, don't give up. Keep thinking and be observant.
    • If you still don't understand how to complete the puzzles, here is a hint for each jail:
      • Jail 1: See that button? Push it and listen to what happens ;)
      • Jail 2: The wrong doors lead to a maze. Listen carefully while inside.
      • Jail 3: Did you find yourself in the bar? Talk to all the customers and they'll give you a hint.
      • Jail 4: One number is everywhere. Listen to the song and complaints to figure out which one.
      • Jail 5: Are you listening and counting along?
      • Jail 6: Read the wall... then listen to the secret voices.
      • Jail 7: Make sure you check the papers for three secret formulas!

    Swedish

    • If you don't understand everything you are hearing and reading, that's okay!
    • Use context clues (tone of voice, environment, situation, facial expressions, emojis, etc.) to try to understand the underlying message.
    • You do not need to understand the meaning of every word or sentence, just the underlying message.
    • If you really don't understand something, it's okay. Just move on.

    The End

    • If you see a "Thanks for playing!" message scrolling up the screen, that means you have completed the game. Congratulations!
    • After this, there is nothing left to do. Click "Next" to continue to the Post-Test.
