Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is your ability to recognize and understand your emotions as they are happening.
- Be mindful: Practice paying attention to your emotions and the causes
- Keep a journal
- Ask for feedback
- Understand your core values
- Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and create a plan to develop areas you identify as weaknesses.
Self-Regulation
Self-regulation is your ability to control your emotional reactions.

- When you feel out of control, take deep breaths
- Acknowledge the emotions and investigate the cause
- Keep a reflective journal about your emotional reactions
- Determine what you could do differently after an emotional reaction
Motivation
Motivation is your reason for doing something. It’s why you have your goals and your willingness to move toward those goals.
- Examine your goals and adjust to have them align with what matters to you
- Celebrate your accomplishments
- Identify things that cause you to feel unmotivated
- Seek to increase self-confidence
- List intrinsic and extrinsic motivators
Empathy
Empathy is your ability to relate, acknowledge, and understand the emotions of someone else without sharing the experience.
- Be curious about the experiences of others.
- Learn something new
- Examine your biases
- Listen openly to people with different and opposing viewpoints.
- Read books or listen to podcasts on relationships and emotions.
Social Skills
Social Skills allow people to build personal and professional relationships through recognizing and influencing the emotions of others.
- Engage with others
- Practice communication skills
- Observe the social skills of others
- Give genuine compliments
- Ask open-ended questions
