    2A: Personal Narrative
  • Section 2

Thanks for sharing your demographic information in Section 1. Now we want to learn more about you, your story and what makes you who you are.

Most programs only ask for things like your grades or a list of activities, but NLC Next is different. We’re building a community of young leaders who bring different perspectives, backgrounds, and lived experiences. That means we care about more than achievements on paper. At NLC, telling your story is part of being a leader.

This section has two parts, and you can answer the questions in writing or by recording short videos. If you choose video, please keep each answer under two minutes.

    Section 2A: Your Personal Narrative

This is your chance to share who you are beyond the surface. You can talk about things like:

    • The people who have influenced your journey
    • Experiences or environments that shaped how you see the world
    • How you spend your time and what matters most to you
    • What motivates you
    • Why you’re excited to apply for NLC Next

Let your answers flow naturally. We want to hear from you.

You will also find 2 video demonstrations and 1 written demonstration below.

    Example 1 - Ambar (Video)

    Example 2 - Karen (Video)

    Example 3 - Tim (Written)

My name is Tim, I am a Nebraskan living in New York City. When I was growing up, I didn't think this would be the place I would be living in, but thanks to my brother that always believed in me I pursued my passion for journalism. He not only helped me celebrate my victories but also showed me what empowering others through storytelling could look like. I wrote my first article about him and his passion for social justice, but I didn't stop there. Soon I was helping other championing change tell their stories too and sharing them with larger audiences. The cycle that started with my brother motivating one person, resulted in us creating a meaningful impact for other changemakers. I hope that by going through NLC Next, I can continue meeting more community leaders but also help tell the story of this era of leaders.

    2B: Community Issue
  • Thanks for sharing your personal narrative introduction with us. Now, we will go into a community issue that interests you.

    Section 2B

If you are accepted into NLC Next, you will create a plan for a project during the 3-month program. This plan will address a community issue or need you are passionate about.

While NLC doesn't expect you to start the program with a fully thought out plan, we do want to know one community issue you have thought about and/ or devoted time and energy towards and what top 2 - 3 actions you would take towards addressing it.

NLC selections committees are looking for specific responses that show your commitment to making positive change in your community.
