Application Guidelines
1- Original Work & Authentic Cultural Representation
Artwork presented must be in accordance with the CIAF Code of Practice and be original work by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists who reside in Queensland (QLD) or have familial ties to Queensland, meaning they have family connections or ancestral links to Indigenous communities in Queensland.
We seek pieces that reflect Indigenous culture and carry cultural significance. Art should express the traditions, stories, and practices passed down through generations. Personal, culturally significant materials, techniques, and motifs are highly encouraged.
2- Traditional Techniques and Modern Interpretations
While we value traditional methods, we also embrace contemporary approaches that respect Indigenous identity and cultural narratives. Submissions showcasing traditional techniques like beadwork, weaving, or carving are particularly welcome.
Printed Items (Limited)
Though our emphasis is on handmade items, we also welcome hand and screen printed items such as tea towels, bags, T-shirts, clothing, or fabric prints. We ask that these designs be original, created by the artisan or in collaboration with the artisan, and meaningfully reflect Indigenous culture. We aim to maintain high standards of craftsmanship in printing.
To preserve the authenticity and uniqueness of our showcase, we prefer not to include items that are mass-produced or commercial in nature, such as items with logos and generic designs. Our focus is on high-quality, handmade creations that reflect the true spirit of Indigenous artistry. We believe in celebrating the individual artistry and cultural heritage of each piece.
All items must reflect high craftsmanship and attention to detail. Using quality materials that enhance the beauty and durability of the work is encouraged. Locally sourced or ethically harvested materials are preferable. Items should be well-finished, with no visible flaws or signs of mass production.
3- Focus on Handmade Craftsmanship
The Artisans Showcase is dedicated to exhibiting works that are handcrafted by Indigenous artisans, with a strong emphasis on cultural authenticity. We appreciate items produced using traditional or contemporary techniques that honour Indigenous heritage.
Acceptable Items:
Handwoven textiles (e.g., baskets, mats, wall hangings)
Handmade jewellery (e.g., beadwork, metalwork, leather)
Hand-carved sculptures or wooden items (e.g., figurines, masks, utensils)
Original paintings and artwork (e.g., traditional or modern)
Handcrafted pottery and ceramics
Hand-sewn garments, such as dresses, scarves, or bag
Screen printed T-shirts
Items That Do Not Meet Criteria:
To ensure our showcase highlights true artisan craftsmanship, we are unable to accept:
Commercially produced or mass-manufactured items (e.g., products made overseas or in large quantities) & generic souvenirs not crafted by the artisan including:
stubby coolers
keyrings
magnets
mass-market trinkets
water bottles
coffee mugs
sublimation-dyed products
Our focus is on handmade, original creations that reflect the skill and artistry of the maker. We appreciate your understanding and support in maintaining the integrity of our showcase.
4- Product Presentation
Items should be presented aesthetically, with careful attention to detail. Applicants should ensure:
Items are clean and ready for display.
Products are securely packaged for transport if necessary.
Products are labeled with the artisan’s name, the community or tribe they represent, and the cultural significance of the piece.
5- Cultural Sensitivity and Respect
We ask all applicants to approach their work with cultural respect and sensitivity. The CIAF Artisans Showcase is a platform for sharing authentic cultural expressions. We expect artisans to ensure their work does not misrepresent, appropriate, or exploit cultural symbols and practices.
