    WSO Executive Committee

    Concept Eight states: "The Board of Trustees delegates full authority for routine management of Al‑Anon Headquarters to its executive committees." The WSO Executive Committee meets monthly. It is described in the Bylaws of Al‑Anon Family Groups Headquarters, Inc as follows: “The Executive Committee is comprised of eight members. The Board of Trustees shall elect four members at each annual meeting. The elected members of the Executive Committee shall include three Al‑Anon members, preferably not Trustees (“At‑Large Members of the Executive Committee”), and an Al Anon member of the administrative Staff of the World Service Office. In addition, the Chairperson of the Finance Committee, the Chairperson of the Policy Committee, and the Executive Director of the World Service Office serve as members and the President as an ex‑officio member of the Executive Committee by virtue of their positions.”

    At‑Large members contribute their Al‑Anon and professional experience in specific fields and situations. More detailed information may be found in the Bylaws of Al‑Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., Al‑Anon’s Twelve Concepts of Service and appropriate sections of the Al‑Anon/Alateen Service Manual (P‑24/27).

  • Requirements:

    • Be an active member of Al‑Anon Family Groups, with at least ten (10) years of continuous membership.
    • Be eligible to become an Al‑Anon Member Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS)
    • Have service leadership experience in at least one of the following positions: District Representative, Area Delegate, Assembly Officer or Coordinator, or AIS Liaison to the AWSC
    • Not be a present member of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.)
    • Be able to speak and write proficiently in the English language
    • Be available for meetings and Committee work 45‑60 days during the year
    • Be able to travel independently without special accommodations
    • Be willing to be selected as Chairperson of the Executive Committee
    • Have not previously served three years on the Executive Committee

    Qualities and Skills:

    • Possesses an understanding of the fiduciary responsibilities of the Board of Trustees that are delegated to the Executive Committee through Concept Eight
    • Possesses knowledge of or experience with governance [roles of Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Board Officers, Staff etc.]
    • Has a working understanding of the Policies of Al‑Anon Family Groups.
    • Exhibits the practice of spiritual principles such as respect, courtesy, honesty, integrity, courage, abundant thinking, and trust as embodied in Al‑Anon’s Legacies
    • Has leadership experience within the Al‑Anon structure that indicates the potential to serve as Chairperson of the Executive Committee
    • Is familiar with Al‑Anon Family Group Inc's Strategic Plan, and has the ability to think strategically, is open to new ideas, is willing to take calculated risks and is able to track WSO’s timely performance of the Strategic Plan Priorities
    • Has the ability to reach decisions collectively and support the group conscience
    • Possesses basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Office Suite, various platforms for virtual meetings, able to communicate through email including opening attachments and accessing and navigating websites and be open to learning new applications and technology.
    • Possesses conflict resolution skills
    • Has a working understanding of the Twelve Traditions and Twelve Concepts of Service
    • Understands Finance Statements and how our finances relate to the fellowship.
    • Possesses the ability to work in groups and get along with diverse personality types.
    • Strong decision‑making skills along with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

  • If chosen to serve as an At‑Large member of the Executive Committee, I agree to these requirements and acknowledge them with my signature below:

    • Relinquish all Al-Anon service positions except those serving only the group during the term of service. (Group Representative is a position which serves at the Area level and must be relinquished.)
    • Obtain approval before accepting any speaker commitments within Al-Anon.
    • Be available to the WSO for consultation on short notice
    • Devote sufficient time to complete all assignments in a timely manner
    • Continue regular attendance at Al-Anon meetings
    • Maintain confidentiality
