    ABOUT HHCI

    HHCI is a comprehensive mental health resource for the Greater Houston community and beyond. At the Hope and Healing Center & Institute, we are reimagining mental health care, transforming lives, and restoring hope to individuals and families.

    Our programming serves adults across the age spectrum, with a focus on those experiencing serious mental illness through structured, strength- and skills-based programming. Many of our services incorporate discussions of faith within mental health care, and we walk with each person wherever they are on their faith journey.

    ABOUT THE CLINICAL INTERNSHIP

    HHCI provides paid clinical placements for 2nd-year graduate students pursuing a master's degree in a mental health-related field.

    This placement is ideal for aspiring LCSW or LPC candidates interested in providing evidence-based therapeutic services in both individual and group settings.

    Program highlights:

    • Therapy programs run 8–12 months and require weekly client attendance
    • Services are provided to adults (18+) experiencing serious, chronic mental illness
    • Services are offered to the community at no charge
    • Individual and group therapy formats

    Please note: HHCI does not offer family therapy, couples counseling, or services for higher-functioning individuals.

    INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

    By submitting this application, applicants should be aware of the following requirements:

    • Pass a drug test and background check
    • Attend the mandatory 5-day onboarding training (August 3–7, 2026) before the start of placement
    • Complete Safeguarding God's Children training
    • Work on-site at HHCI: 24 hours per week (remote internships are not accepted)
    • Thursdays on-site are mandatory (clinical staffing and supervision held weekly)
    • One evening per week is required to facilitate a group; all other hours are daytime (9 AM–6 PM)
    • No ongoing night/evening hours beyond the required weekly group
    • Students are compensated as hourly employees

  • HHCI Expectations for Intern Schedules

    • Internship spots are available for students who can commit to both the Fall and Spring semesters. We are not currently accepting students for summer placements.
    • HHCI requires interns to complete 24 hours per week for the duration of the internship program, typically across two and a half days.
    • HHCI does not offer weekend or evening internship hours.

    Prepare 1-2 case summaries that are relevant to a DMS-5 TR diagnosis and submit below.
  • WRITING SAMPLE

    Please submit at least one writing sample using the prompt below. Your response may be adapted from existing classwork or written new.

    Prompt: Imagine you are working in a clinical or therapist role. The setting can be any environment you choose — such as a nonprofit, private practice, hospital, emergency room, or other setting. Using the outline below, write a case study introducing a new client.

    Case Study Outline

    1. Introduction (1–2 paragraphs) Set the stage for the case study scenario. Include the following:

    • Client demographics
    • Referral source
    • Presenting symptoms
    • Relevant circumstances surrounding the situation
    • Client history leading up to the events being addressed

    2. Additional History & Background (2–3 paragraphs) Expand on the introduction with the following:

    • Medical and psychiatric history
    • Family and social history
    • Physical health history
    • Any additional details that add context or clarity to the presenting problem, such as laboratory or diagnostic results, physical assessment findings, previous medications or treatments, or other relevant background information 

    3. Assessment Findings & Course of Care (2–4 paragraphs) From your perspective as the clinician, provide the following:

    • A preliminary DSM-5 diagnosis with your clinical reasoning
    • A clear explanation of why this is not a differential diagnosis
    • Your proposed treatment plan, including goals, strategies, and therapeutic modalities
