If you are not an IBCLC recognized health professional, applicants must demonstrate a passing grade in each of the courses listed below and the courses must be a minimum of one academic credit session (e.g. semester, trimester, quarter, etc.) in length and provided by an accredidted institution of higher learning. 

Please indicate whether you have successfully completed at least one academic course at an accredited institution in the following coursework. 

Completion of all required courses is not a requirement for applying to our training program, however, you must have a plan to complete the coursework by the end of the Fall semester. The program allows for one course to be taken over the summer and one concurrently during the Fall semester. Proof of completion and a passing grade must be submitted for the student to progress into the Spring semester. Applicants should not be missing more than two prerequisites. (note that A&P can be taken as a combined course). 

Essay 1: Describe why you would like to become an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and how you know you are prepared for an accelerated accredited pathway 2 program. Make sure to answer Prompt A, B, and C completely.

Prompt A. Professional Goals

1. How have your previous work, volunteer work, and lived experiences led you to apply to MRT-TI? Be specific and provide examples about how these experiences have shaped your interest, skills, and understanding of lactation care and human milk feeding.

2. What do you hope to achieve as an IBCLC?

3. How do you intend to use your IBCLC credential in your career and community?

Prompt B: Understanding the Profession

4. What steps have you taken to learn about the role, responsibilities, and expectations of an IBCLC, including any meetings, conferences and webinars you have attended (list names and dates of conferences/webinars)?

Prompt C: Preparation for the Program

5. What steps have you taken to ensure you understand the expectations of the program; accelerated graduate-level coursework in a school of public health, in-person participation in class, and meeting the demands of an 8–10-hour clinical day each week at a variety of clinical settings?

6. What steps have you taken to ensure you can balance the intensity and requirements of this accelerated program, alongside any other commitments you may (i.e. school, job, family, caretaking, etc.)?

Essay 2: Our graduate-level coursework requires students to think through research and concepts that intertwine lactation and public health. We know that economic, political, and social factors contribute to differences in health outcomes within and between countries. How do you plan to use your lactation training to address the systemic barriers that lead to disparities in human milk feeding and how will these strategies improve health related outcomes? Highlight challenges you aim to address and the strategies you might employ in your community or practice.

Essay 3: In the lactation profession, consultants must work with a variety of professionals and clients with different lived experiences. Describe a time when you had to adapt your approach when working with someone with different lived experiences than yours (this could be professionally or personally).
