What is an Art and Culture Centre?
Art and Culture Centres are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-owned organisations grounded in cultural authority, community governance and self-determination. These not-for-profit centres are places of creation, where artists work on Country to produce and share visual art, language, and cultural knowledge. They offer economic, social and cultural value—providing employment, training, and wellbeing support—and serve as vital community spaces for intergenerational learning. Governed by local Elders and cultural leaders, these centres uphold the rights of artists, protect cultural and intellectual property, and ensure fair pay and attribution. More than galleries, they are hubs for cultural expression, where art is not just a product, but a practice of care, belonging, and continuity. Their purpose-driven operations reinvest profits into community benefit, ensuring that artists and their communities remain at the heart of the Indigenous art economy.
