Our volunteers help protect harbor seals and their pups during La Jolla’s pupping season (December–May) through observation, documentation, education, and community science.

This is the application stage only.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected applicants will be invited for a brief interview. Upon acceptance, volunteers will receive:

A required 60-minute Zoom training
Additional seasonal guidelines
A liability waiver
Access to the Seal Pupping Season volunteer shift sign-up form

Before submitting your application, please review and acknowledge the following:

Participation & Conduct
I understand that submitting this application does not guarantee selection or placement as a Wildlife Jewels® volunteer.

If accepted, I will participate as a non-paid volunteer in the Wildlife Jewels® EYES™ Hearts Seals Pupping Season Program, focused on observing and documenting harbor seals and coastal conditions in La Jolla.

I understand this is an observation-only role. Volunteers do not approach, handle, feed, or attempt to rescue seals, pups, or any wildlife.

I agree to follow all safety guidelines, remain within my physical capabilities, and act responsibly while participating in Wildlife Jewels® activities.

I agree to comply with all relevant rules and regulations, including directions from lifeguards and guidelines under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).

Assumption of Risk
I acknowledge that participation in outdoor coastal activities may involve inherent risks, including uneven terrain, weather exposure, ocean conditions, and the presence of wildlife or debris.

If accepted, I agree to assume these risks and will exercise caution and sound judgment during volunteer activities.

Liability & Release

I understand that Wildlife Jewels® will not be held responsible for any injury, illness, or property damage that may occur during participation in volunteer activities.

I agree that I will be required to review and sign a full Volunteer Waiver of Liability before participating in any on-site activities or shifts.

Media & Communications Consent

I grant permission to Wildlife Jewels® to use photographs, videos, or written content I voluntarily share for educational, advocacy, or promotional purposes.
