Role of the Lead Artist/Photographer
The Lead Artist/Photographer will play a central role in shaping the 11-week photography workshop series and culminating exhibition. Responsibilities include:
- Co-Design the Workshop Curriculum - Collaborate with LA Commons to develop and refine the photography curriculum, integrating technical instruction with themes connected to Leimert Park’s legacy in Black arts, social activism, and contemporary community life.
- Mentor and Support Participants - Provide hands-on mentorship to 10 youth a community participants
- Participate in Story and Image Gathering - Work closely with participants throughout the workshop to guide story and image-gathering activities that inform their individual projects and the collective narrative represented in the final exhibition and project book.
- Support creative direction of the final exhibition - Collaborate with the project team to shape the artistic vision for the public exhibition in Leimert Park site, ensuring participant work is presented with care, cultural integrity, and community resonance.
- Collaborate on the Project Book - Partner with the designer and project staff to support the development of a printed book featuring participant photographs and stories.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in photography, visual storytelling, and/or public-facing arts projects
- Experience working with youth and/or community-based arts programs
- Strong familiarity, lived experience, or deep connection with Leimert Park / South Central Los Angeles
- Commitment to culturally grounded, community-responsive artmaking

$5000 stipend for Lead Artist
