What you could bring to class.
Of course a sewing machine, basic sewing supplies and a prewashed sweatshirt for the base of their jacket.
The sweatshirt can be new or used. Even stained does not matter as it can be covered with fabric. Either a raglan or regular inset sleeve will work fine.
Sweatshirt:
~~ can be covered with one fabric and embellished with ribbons, rattail, decorative yarns and quilting.
~~ some of our unfinished projects might be the source to cover the sweatshirt
~~ a theme might be the base for the jacket - sports or tee shirts/logos
~ make quilt blocks specifically for the jacket, bring additional fabrics for colorful borders
~~ choose assorted fabrics in a color scheme that you like
~~ choose a designer like Loralie or Laurel Burch and bring assorted fabrics from that collection.
** bring more fabric than you think you need - you can always take it back home
I will bring strips of warm and natural batting should someone wish to lengthen their sweatshirt. If you do lengthen it, you will need to bring fabric (1/2 yard x WOF) for lining bottom of jacket (cover the W&N)
I will also bring stabilizer if you wish to put a placket down the front of the jacket to make buttonholes.
1/3 yard of fabric will line and bind the sleeve and give you enough matching fabric to put binding on jacket.
Thread:
Bring thread to match your sweatshirt. Also various colors you may wish to use with your decorative stitches.
Sometimes an invisible thread is good when stitching over braids rather than matching braid to thread.
Razzle Dazzle is thread that is put into your bobbin and as you stitch on the wrong side of the sweatshirt, the bobbin will add embellishment to the right side of sweatshirt.
Bring the sewing machine feet you need to couch or do a decorative stitch.
Children's jackets or vests are fun to make. Bring two sweatshirts if you like for a few more options.
If making a vest you may wish to bring 1/4" to 1/2" elastic for options of making side closures.
I have seen students bring buttons to just add at random all over the jacket; glitter paint (little bottle from Michaels or Hobby Lobby) and accentuate some of the fabrics; make fabric prairie points for added embellishment and color; pictures printed on fabric ; your imagination will be your best inspiration.
The jacket can be finished by binding, putting in a zipper, or buttons down the front.
