Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, international public service sorority comprised of more than 350,000 predominately African-American, college-educated women. Since its founding in 1913 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has established itself as an organization that seriously considers the issues impacting the Black community and boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans.
The San Antonio Alumnae Chapter (SAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was chartered in 1933, and one of the Sorority’s 22 founders, Myra Davis Hemmings, was the first president of SAAC. Our Chapter is committed to serving our local community through the Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
Encouraging young women to achieve excellence through higher education is a primary focus of our organization and local chapter. The San Antonio Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., supports this focus by awarding scholarships to young women who exemplify academic excellence, strong leadership, and community involvement.
