2026-2027 Application Form
Lakes and Bridges Charter School (LABCS) is an Alternative Education Campus (AEC) for children whose primary diagnosis or area of difficulty is dyslexia/SLD (Specific Learning Disability). The school's program is designed specifically and intentionally to meet the instructional and social needs of bright students who struggle to become skilled readers (e.g. children with dyslexia/SLD). The school will be accepting applications for rising grades 1-8 for the 2026-2027 school year between January 1-February 15, 2026 for the lottery. The lottery for qualified candidates will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 3:30 pm. The 2026-2027 school year tentatively commences the first week of August 2026.
Qualified Candidates
Qualified students are: 1) SC residents; 2) have a primary diagnosis of dyslexia/SLD through a formal public or private evaluation if they have been evaluated; 3) if they have not been formally evaluated, they have the characteristics of dyslexia through a screener administered by LABCS after the application is received; 4) have demonstrated a need for such specific services through (but not limited to) documentation in an IEP or 504 plan with dyslexia/SLD as the primary eligibility.
LABCS's Application Process
A parent or legal guardian completes the application process by completing this form with the necessary accompanying paperwork. Once the application is completed with all the paperwork uploaded, the admissions committee will schedule an informal screening of your child if the committee feels it is needed. During the spring of 2017, the SC charter school law was amended that allowed Alternative Education Campuses (AEC's) the ability to be mission-specific and turn away students who do not meet the criteria of a Qualified Candidate for the school's mission. The determination process for Qualified Candidates to be used by the admissions team is as follows: 1) a review of the current documents submitted as part of the application process; 2) a review of the student's informal screening*; 3) a determination by the admissions team as to whether the applicant demonstrates an unexpected reading delay and be classified as having the characteristics of dyslexia/SLD, if not previously diagnosed or qualified through an IEP, 504 plan, and/or recent public or private psychological evaluation by a licensed school psychologist within the past 1-3 years. *Any informal screenings conducted by the school are solely for in-house information and results are not shared with parents/guardians as they are not norm-based. They only show us consistency in characteristics often associated with dyslexia.
Notice of Qualification
Once the admissions team has completed the process and determined if the child is a qualified candidate, the parent/legal guardian will be notified either during or after open enrollment closes. If the number of applicants exceeds the number available seats, qualified candidates will go to the lottery, as needed, per grade. During the 2026-2027 school year, LABCS will offer education services for qualified candidates in grades 1-8. Applications will be accepted from January 1-February 15, 2026. Parents will be notified of acceptance (if there are fewer qualified applicants than slots available) or their child's lottery number for the lottery held on March 20, 2026, at 3:30 pm. The notice shall be sent to the email provided on the application.
Acceptance/Declination
If a child's lottery number is pulled for a seat for the 2026-2027 school year in the lottery, the parent or guardian has until the indicated date in the email to accept admission. If LABCS has received no response to the notice of admission by the indicated date, a follow-up phone call will be made to remind the parent/legal guardian of the passed deadline. If no response is provided, it shall be deemed that the offer of admission has been declined. Applications must contain all applicable and accurate information listed in the application. All uploaded forms must be uploaded in a pdf format. Do not upload jpg/jpeg files or similar. Any inaccurate or withheld information can result in the child's application being withdrawn or deemed ineligible as a qualified candidate.
