A space for words we needed — and words someone else might still be waiting for.
Not everyone grows up seeing themselves reflected back.
For many lesbians, figuring out who we are happens quietly — in bedrooms, in notebooks, in late‑night searches, in moments of wondering “is there anyone else like me?” Even as representation has grown, many of us still move through the world without feeling fully seen, safe, or understood.
Letters to Our Younger Selves exists to gently change that.
This initiative is a growing collection of real letters written by lesbians, for lesbians. Each letter is addressed to a younger version of ourselves — or to anyone standing in that same uncertain place — offering the reassurance, honesty, softness, and courage we once needed.
Why this matters
Representation isn’t just about being visible. It’s about knowing you’re not alone.
When stories are shared, they become signals — quiet reminders that others have felt this way too. That confusion can soften into clarity. That fear can coexist with hope. That choosing yourself is possible, even if it takes time.
Every letter adds to a collective archive of lived experience. Together, they help build a world where lesbians can recognise themselves earlier, feel safer sooner, and move through life with a little less doubt.
What these letters can be
Letters might be:
Reassuring, gentle, and full of care
Honest about fear, confusion, or internalised shame
Reflective, humorous, or quietly proud
About coming out — or choosing not to
About love, loss, joy, or becoming yourself
There is no right tone. No right ending. No expectation to have everything figured out.
An invitation — only if you’re ready
Sharing your story is entirely optional.
If you ever feel ready, you’re invited to write a letter to your younger self — knowing it may one day be read by someone who needs those words just as much as you once did.
You don’t need to be brave. You don’t need to be polished. You don’t need to share anything you’re not comfortable with.
Your words can remain anonymous. Your boundaries will always be respected.
Building representation together
At Her + Her Collective, we believe community is built through subtle connection — through recognising ourselves in one another.
Letters to Our Younger Selves is one way we quietly build that representation: through shared stories, lived truth, and collective care.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for existing. And thank you — whether you write a letter or simply read one — for being part of something that reminds us we were never alone.
