Don Magazine and Oharano Studio Gallery invite artists from around the world to submit portfolios for the 2026 Artist Residency Competition. Selected artists will receive a free two-week residency in Kyoto, with their work featured in Don Magazine Issue 14, releasing September 20, 2026.
Residency Details
Two-week stay at Oharano Studio Gallery in Kyoto
Private workspace + access to shared studio amenities (Accommodation included)
Travel costs to Oharano Studio are the responsibility of the entrant
Basic tools available; specialized materials should be supplied by the artist
Residents will be invited to participate in an open studio, talk, or informal gathering with Oharano Studio and the Don team
Selection Process
Applications reviewed by the Don Magazine editorial team and Oharano Studio curators
Selection focuses on artistic quality and clarity of proposal
Winners announced March 31, 2026 (All applicants will receive email notification)
Expectations During Residency
Artists are expected to actively create new work
Final works or work-in-progress will be featured in Don Magazine Issue 14
Residents will be asked for a short interview for the magazine
Publication & Usage Rights
Artists retain full copyright to their work
By applying, selected artists grant Oharano Studio Gallery and Don Magazine permission to publish residency work in print and digital formats and to use images for promotional purposes related to the residency and the magazine
