The Sacrament of Confirmation 2026

Dear Parents,

Our Lady of the Assumption Parish (OLA) will be celebrating Confirmations at OLA Church on Sunday 31 May, 2026, at 9:00am. Children in Year 6 or above who have received the Sacraments of,

Baptism,
Reconciliation, and
Holy Communion,

are eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Children of Eastern Catholic Rites who have already received Confirmation (Chrismation) at their Baptism are encouraged to attend lessons to better appreciate the Sacrament.

Please contact Fr Michael if your child has not received the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, or Holy Communion. Listed below are the parish requirements regarding enrolment and preparation for Confirmation.

A SPONSOR
As far as possible each child should have a sponsor to help your child be a faithful witness of Christ. A sponsor is to help your child fulfil the Christian duties, for which they are strengthened and equipped in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Therefore, a sponsor must be a faithful and practicing Catholic themselves.

It is fitting for your child's Baptismal Godparent/Sponsor to also serve as his/her Confirmation sponsor.

The sponsor's role is supportive of the parents' role. Therefore, parents cannot serve as sponsor for their own child.

A person from an eastern Orthodox Church may act as a sponsor together with a Catholic.

PREPARATION SESSIONS
Candidates will be required to complete one section of the Confirmation Workbook each week, for four weeks, with their parents. Candidates from the parish must hand in their Confirmation Workbooks to the parish Catechist or Fr Michael at the rehearsal.

SUNDAY CATECHESIS
Our experienced parish catechist, Mrs Jill Hohnen, will be providing the opportunity for Confirmation lessons at 10am -10.45am on Sunday mornings to help the children with their workbooks and in understanding the content. I highly recommend taking advantage of this assistance.

ATTENDING SUNDAY MASS
Candidates and their sponsors, are required to attend Sunday Mass, which is a general obligation for all Catholics. (The "Vigil Mass" on Saturday evening is considered a Sunday Mass.) Candidates will be provided with a form as a record of attendance at the 5 Sunday Masses leading up to Confirmation, i.e. Sun 25-26 April to Sun 23-24 May. Please, ask the Parish Priest, or Mrs Jill Hohnen, to sign this form at the conclusion of each Mass. All Candidates are required to return this form to Fr. Michael or Jill Hohnen at the rehearsal.

If you are going on holidays, please take care to consider where you will attend Sunday Mass. Weekday Masses do not substitute for keeping the Lord's Day Holy by attending Sunday Mass.

If your child is unable to attend because of illness, simply note this on the attendance form. In this circumstance it is good to make an effort, according to the circumstances, to say some prayers at home, such as the Rosary, or follow a Mass online.

REHEARSAL
All candidates will have the opportunity to rehearse at 3.30pm on 29 May at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. The address is 72 Underwood Rd, Homebush.

SUMMARY
To prepare your child for this Sacrament, you are required to:

- Attend the Parent Information Meeting on Tue 28 April at 7:00pm

- Have the Mass attendance form signed each week (at least from the 25-26 April weekend).

OLA Parish Mass times are 5.30pm Vigil, 9am Sun, and 10.30am Sun (Deaf Mass, except on the 3rd Sunday of the month) at 72 Underwood Rd, Homebush.

- Complete the Sacramental Workbooks and return to Mrs Jill Hohnen or Fr Michael by Rehearsal. (Books will be returned.)

Additionally, the fee for the Sacramental preparations is $20, which helps to cover all costs of books, resources and certificates, payable at the Information Night (tap-n-go available).

A copy of sacramental certificates can be found at the parish of one's Baptism. Ask for a certificate of the sacraments you have received as recorded in the Baptismal Register. If there are any difficulties or other questions, please contact Fr Michael on 0466 319 290.

  Also, a child of a father belonging to Catholic rites other than the Latin rite, such as Maronite, Melchite, Chaldean, etc, would normally be Confirmed in that Rite, unless that Rite is not present in the region. To do otherwise requires permission from the appropriate Bishop for the father's rite.

- It is good to have a sponsor, and fitting for that sponsor to be the same as at Baptism (i.e. a Godparent). The sponsor's role is "to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in this sacrament."
  
  Being a sponsor requires:
  - Being a Catholic
  - who is 16 years or older,
  - who has been confirmed and
  - has already received the most holy sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation, and
  - who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on. e.g. He or she is practicing the faith themselves, attending Mass on Sundays and living a Christian life.
  - Not being the father or mother, and
  - not bound by a canonical penalty.
