Sparks Within Reach School-Year Program:
Since 2017, Sparks Within Reach has been an established, youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit working with NYC students facing housing insecurity. Over 250 college and high school students have been part of SWR, working to address housing insecurity and education inequality in NYC through providing much-needed academic and emotional support to at-risk students. Come join our team to gain valuable teaching and leadership experience and make some incredible memories!
We are looking for compassionate, dedicated high school students to become tutors with us this winter/spring. We are excited to offer a new tutoring program in partnership with Samaritan Village's Boulevard Family Residence, and are currently recruiting high school and college students to join our team. No experience is required, as all tutors will be trained in tutoring methods, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed teaching. In addition, all tutors will receive community service hours for the time that they work!
Samaritan Village School-Year Tutoring Program:
Sparks tutors will be working with children at the Boulevard Family Residence, a Samaritan Village housing center providing shelter and support to homeless families in Elmhurst, Queens. Tutors will form an individual relationship with their student and support them through one-on-one tutoring and mentoring utilizing Sparks' original curriculum and activities! Tutors will also have the opportunity to work on an optional independent project to expand their engagement with education and housing reform under the mentorship of Sparks Within Reach staff.
The Sparks x Samaritan program will run from February 3rd to June 11th, and sessions will take place from 4:15-5:30 PM. Tutors may choose to volunteer on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or both days. The Boulevard Family Residence is located right off the Elmhurst Avenue station (served by the E, F, M, and R trains), making it easily accessible by public transport.
