1.1 Instructor self-check* This field is required.
Fitness for duty: No alcohol or drug influence; mentally alert (corresponds to “never use lifts or slopes while under the influence of alcohol or drugs”)
Equipment: Helmet properly fastened, no visible cracks; bindings/boot buckles secure; phone charged and on you
Runaway equipment: Check leashes / anti-runaway devices and retention systems for participants (“prevent runaway equipment”).

1.2 Terrain and environment assessment* This field is required.
Weather, visibility, and snow conditions; choose runs and exit routes that match the group’s / weakest participant’s level (“stay in control and within your limits”).
Identify and respect closures, warning signs, and temporary control zones (“obey signs and warnings; keep off closed trails”).

1.3 Participant check-in* This field is required.
Verify name / age / health declaration; check helmet, boots, and board/skis fit;
confirm grouping and tail-gunner / sweep (for a 2:4 dynamic group lesson, assign a lead and a sweep).

1.4 Handling alcohol / drug impairment – right to refuse the lesson* This field is required.
If before or during the lesson the instructor notices clear signs of alcohol or drug impairment (strong smell of alcohol, unsteady gait, slurred speech, delayed reactions, abnormal pupils, inability to follow basic safety instructions, etc.), the instructor has the right, for safety reasons, to refuse or immediately terminate the lesson and must notify the TXSNOW duty coordinator as soon as possible. Ski Patrol or resort security may be asked to assist if needed.
Fees: Under the TXSNOW Lesson Purchase & Service Agreement, the lesson ends immediately and the lesson fee is non-refundable.
Evidence: Prioritize written notes, timestamps, and witnesses. If the situation is highly disputed, occurs in a public area, and recording is allowed by law and resort rules, the instructor may, in a measured way, take a short video that does not show faces, ID, or minors. This is for internal compliance and insurance only and must be stored and deleted in line with TXSNOW’s Privacy & Evidence Retention Policy.

1.5 Safety briefing (1-minute script)* This field is required.For example:
“The goal today is to learn while staying in control. People below you / in front of you have the right of way. Stop only where you can be seen from above and don’t block the trail. Before starting or merging, always look uphill. Respect closures and all signs. Never ski or ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If there is a collision, you must stay on scene and give your contact details to Ski Patrol.”
“This is a booked time slot: if you’re late or we’re interrupted, the time is not extended. Please follow instructions—safety comes first.”

2.1 Control first* This field is required.
Speed and line are set by the weakest participant in the group.
Watch blind spots and intersections closely (“stay in control”).

2.2 Formation and spacing* This field is required.
Use snake / fan-shaped formations; give a clear verbal cue before any change and visually confirm.
Before starting or merging, look uphill and yield (“look uphill and yield to others”).

2.3 “Five don’ts” for stopping* This field is required.Only stop where you are visible from above and not blocking traffic, and leave the fall line quickly (“stop only where you can be seen and don’t obstruct the trail”) Do not stop:
Under chairlifts, around towers, or directly beneath lift lines (including gondolas and their drop zones).
In active snowmaking / grooming setups: near snow guns, water/power hoses, or electrical boxes.
In winch-cat work zones or any flashing-light area; never cross or approach winch cables under any circumstance.
On blind knolls, inside turns, narrow choke points, merges, or in terrain park entry/landing zones.
In trail crossings, on or above active rescue scenes, or directly above another lesson group.

2.4 Right of way* This field is required.
The downhill / person in front has the right of way; anyone approaching from the side or above must yield.

2.5 Signs and closures* This field is required.
Everyone in the group must follow signs, warnings, and hazard markings. Closed runs and closed zones are strictly off-limits.

2.6 Lift safety* This field is required.
Use lifts only when participants can safely load/ride/unload and have the stamina to do so; if unsure, ask lift staff for help.

2.7 Runaway equipment* This field is required.
If a ski/board/pole escapes, control the group and retrieve it as soon as it is safe. If needed, set a lookout/spotter above to warn others (“prevent runaway equipment”).

2.8 Staying focused on the lesson* This field is required.
Instructors must not stop for casual chats with friends or leave participants unattended while socializing.

2.9 Handling outside distractions* This field is required.
If a non-participant approaches to chat or take photos, politely say something like:“I’m in the middle of a lesson right now—let’s catch up after,”and then promptly return the group to a safe, visible formation.

2.10 2:4 dynamic group lesson – temporary split / injury protocol (dynamic 1:(4–N))* This field is required.
Participant temporarily leaving the group (N ≥ 1)In a 2:4 dynamic group lesson, if N participants need to temporarily leave with an instructor (binding adjustment, fatigue, washroom, injury requiring Ski Patrol /
Instructor temporarily leaving (no participant leaves)If no participant leaves, but one instructor must temporarily step away to assist or due to injury, the group temporarily becomes 1:4. The instructor keeps the route conservative until both instructors are back together or the lesson ends according to policy.
Duty to accompany and reportThe instructor who accompanies a participant is fulfilling a teaching/safety duty:Notify Ski Patrol immediately and stay with the participant until Patrol or authorized medical staff take over.Complete an initial report within 2 hours (T+2h) and a full report within 24 hours (T+24h) as required in the TXSNOW Incident Reporting SOP, including basic facts and a timeline.

a) The escorting instructor and the remaining instructor must confirm the hand-off in person or by phone (not just text, as the remaining instructor may not see it): include time, location, reason, where you are going, expected duration, and next meeting point. If needed, also send a brief update in the internal ops group.
b) The remaining instructor immediately switches to 1:(4–N): before each new segment, visually confirm headcount and safety.
c) Pre-set a meeting point and use visible, safe stopping zones; keep the phone available for calls. If the escorted participant is taken to Patrol / first aid, record any incident number.
d) Reunite or end: Once the escorting instructor has finished, rejoin the group at the agreed meeting point. If the participant cannot resume the lesson, follow the TXSNOW Lesson Purchase & Service Agreement.
e) Documentation: If an incident occurred, both instructors complete their own incident reports (basic facts and timeline) and submit within 24 hours after the lesson.

2.10.2 Example

If 1 out of 4 participants needs to leave temporarily with an instructor (for example, binding issues that require adjustment, or an injury where Ski Patrol asks the instructor to accompany the participant to first aid), the designated instructor goes with that participant. The remaining instructor immediately runs the lesson as 1:3, choosing low-risk terrain and consolidation drills until they meet again at the planned meeting point.

3.1 Rescue first, responsibility later* This field is required.
Set an uphill warning / lookout → call Ski Patrol → stabilize and keep the participant warm → do not leave the participant until Patrol has taken over.
For collisions: under applicable rules, you must stay on scene and provide contact details to Ski Patrol.

3.2 Internal notification and reporting* This field is required.
Once the participant is stable and/or Patrol is en route or on scene, notify TXSNOW as soon as practicable.
Submit a completed TXSNOW Incident Report within 24 hours.
