2.1 Stop further sliding & set up an uphill warning

Quickly place crossed skis or planted poles uphill of the scene to warn oncoming traffic; if needed, have another person stand farther uphill to signal.
Move the rest of the group to a safe edge of the trail to avoid a secondary incident.

3.2 Stay with the participant

Keep them warm (extra jacket/cover, reduce heat loss).
Offer calm verbal reassurance; monitor consciousness and pain.
The instructor stays with the participant at all times, does not chase a suspected responsible party, and does not leave the participant.

5.1 once Ski Patrol arrives

Give Ski Patrol a concise verbal handover:o participant status; what has already been done; any known medical history / allergies / previous injuries (if available from the participant info form).
Record: the name/ID of the patroller; where the participant is being taken (first aid room / off-site ambulance, etc.).

5.2 Group management

1:1 lesson: the lesson ends, or the instructor transitions into accompanying the participant to medical care.
2:4 dynamic group lesson: First ensure the remaining participants are safe. Where there are two instructors, one accompanies the injured participant with Patrol; the other continues the lesson with the remaining group as a smaller class, maintaining safety and control.
Traditional 1:x group lessons: If the instructor needs to accompany the injured participant, the current lesson should be ended and the group dismissed in line with resort and TXSNOW policy.

Care & follow-up: TXSNOW staff will follow up with the participant or their guardian within T+24–72 hours (for check-in and process explanation only).
Record keeping: File the incident report, radio/phone time logs, photos (if any), Ski Patrol incident number, and internal communication records.
TXSNOW internal review (lessons may be paused until retraining is completed, if needed): Review terrain choice, group formation, speed control, visibility of commands, blind-spot judgment, and equipment checks. If any SOP deviations are found, schedule and document re-training.

quick checklist for instructors
Call – Ski Patrol first.
Guard – Set uphill warning, protect from further harm, keep the participant warm and as still as possible.
Stay – Do not leave the participant until Patrol takes over.
Report – Initial report to TXSNOW within 2 hours; full report within 24 hours.
Don’t – Don’t admit fault, don’t give medical diagnoses, don’t post on social media.
