The eligibility criteria for the Scholarship Program are:
1. Student must have at least one parent of African American origin;
2. Student must be a graduating senior at a public or private high school in the Mahoning Valley (Mahoning and Trumbull Counties);
3. Student must be attending Youngstown State University seeking a health related or engineering degree. Such degrees prepare them for careers in Nursing, Respiratory Therapist, Mechanical or Architectural Engineering or other engineering specialties;
4. Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative Grade Point Average of no less than a 2.85 on a 4.00 scale; and
5. Has financial need.
Scholarship is $1,500.00 each and non-renewable. The scholarship is divided into increments paid upon proof of enrollment, schedule and grades each semester or quarter during the freshman year. The first disbursement of $1,000 requires official letter of admittance and official registration of classes. The second disbursement of $500 requires transcript documenting GPA and schedule of enrollment for upcoming semester reflecting 15 credits for the semester.
The required documents to submit are:
- An application (all required documents must be submitted with the application)
- An official high school transcript
- A personal essay
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- A letter from your high school on the school’s letterhead documenting: High School Name and Address, GPA, Class Rank. The letter must be signed by the Principal or Guidance Counselor.
