The eligibility criteria for the Scholarship Program are:

1. Student must have at least one parent of African American origin;

2. Student must be a graduating senior at a public or private high school in the Mahoning Valley (Mahoning and Trumbull Counties);

3. Student must be attending Youngstown State University seeking a health related or engineering degree. Such degrees prepare them for careers in Nursing, Respiratory Therapist, Mechanical or Architectural Engineering or other engineering specialties;

4. Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative Grade Point Average of no less than a 2.85 on a 4.00 scale; and

5. Has financial need.

Scholarship is $1,500.00 each and non-renewable. The scholarship is divided into increments paid upon proof of enrollment, schedule and grades each semester or quarter during the freshman year. The first disbursement of $1,000 requires official letter of admittance and official registration of classes. The second disbursement of $500 requires transcript documenting GPA and schedule of enrollment for upcoming semester reflecting 15 credits for the semester.

The required documents to submit are:

- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- A letter from your high school on the school’s letterhead documenting: High School Name and Address, GPA, Class Rank. The letter must be signed by the Principal or Guidance Counselor.

1. ESSAY - Please prepare a typed 250–500 word essay about your educational and professional goals and your reason for seeking scholarship assistance. Please use a separate sheet of paper for the essay, include your name, address, and staple the essay to this application. (Must be uploaded in pdf document)

2. THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Ask three (3) individuals who know you well to submit letters of recommendation. At least one letter should be a teacher or other school professional. Please attach the letters to this application. (Must be uploaded in pdf document)

3.OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT - Request an official transcript from the guidance counselor at your high school. The transcript must be attached to this application. (Must be uploaded in pdf document)

4. EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION - A letter from your high school on the school’s letterhead documenting: High School Name and Address, GPA, Class Rank. The letter must be signed by the Principal or Guidance Counselor. (Must be uploaded in pdf document)
REVIEW OF APPLICANTS
Finalists for a scholarship award will be notified of their selection by mail and scheduled for a personal interview. Interviews will be conducted oby members of the Scholarship Committee of the Junior Civic League. Scholarship recipients and their parents will be notified of the award. All recipients will be recognized.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
Selected Scholarship recipients agree to abide by the deadlines listed below or scholarship award will be forfeited:

First Disbursement: August 1, 2026 Official letter of admittance and official registration of classes with at least 12 credit hours per semester must be turned in to the Junior Civic League by emailing pdf documents to scholarship@juniorcivicleague.org. August 15, 2026 First Disbursement will be mailed.

Second Disbursement: January 1, 2027 transcript documenting GPA and schedule of enrollment for upcoming semester or quarter documenting full-time status must be turned in to the Junior Civic Leagueby emailing pdf documents to scholarship@juniorcivicleague.org. January 15, 2027 Second Disbursement will be mailed.
CERTIFICATION: We certify that we have read and understand the requirements governing the Junior Civic League Scholarship and further certify that the information that we have provided is true and complete to the best of our knowledge. We agree to provide proof of this information, including copies of tax returns at the time of a personal interview by the Scholarship Committee. We realize that if documentation is not provided or if we do not comply with the requirements, the Applicant may be deemed ineligible for a scholarship.
