From Science to Solutions: What Every Therapist Needs to Know About Substance Use

Training Information
Even if you do not specialize treating addiction, we all encounter substance use in our work as therapists. What we do not know can hurt our clients, and so it is essential that we know what the evidence says about substance use disorder. This three-hour training is focused on defining substance use disorders, understanding where they come from and the neurobiology behind them, identifying frequently co-ocurring disorders, reviewing how to assess substance use and when to refer to a specialist/higher level of care, and an overview of evidence based treatments.

Trainer Information
Brian McCann, LCSW, CADC specializes in working with substance use disorders and co-morbidities, helping individuals obtain the agency that they need to live the best version of their lives. His work incorporates evidence-based modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Attachment-based Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Family Systems Theory, Integrative, Interpersonal Work, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Psychodynamic approaches. He has a wealth of knowledge about substance use disorder from his time working in addiction treatent facilities and has continued this work since switching to private practice.

Participants will receive an evaluation to complete after the program, which will generate their CE certificate. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 8/15/25-8/15/26.
